Children: ‘No Christmas, Please!’ YAY!

PoliticalPossum · 18/12/2024 06:25

So, my teenagers confirmed last night they don’t want to do Christmas! They just want to spend the day with family, relaxing, eating good food, playing with the dog and watching old films - no roast, no presents, no forced interactions with family they don’t like.

Not sure whether to laugh, because honestly just eating nibbles, fruit and salads all day whilst we watch Star Wars and DH loses so badly at scrabble he tosses the tiles across the table again sounds amazing, or to cry tears of joy because they actually agreed on something together (honestly, it’s the first time I can remember them ever agreeing)

Not even anything to really comment on here. I just wanted to post and say how happy I am that we all get a day off and can actually just relax without any pressure! Obviously did not say this to them, just nodded and said ‘oh that sounds lovely’ but I am so pleased!

@biscuitsandbooks You missed out the teens not wanting presents and merrily munching on salad

DefyingGravity01 · 18/12/2024 10:36

I will be spending Christmas with my adopted teenagers and we won’t be playing board games and they will be expecting presents!

It will be very low key (no parties for 40) as they find celebrations tricky.

Note: my dc do exist 😐

I’m afraid you lost me at salads all day ….

How sad. It sounds like you’ve projected your idea of a perfect Christmas onto your kids and they’re probably doing this to placate you.

Yes, the endless Christmas salads was the point I spotted a dorsal fin heading rapidly for shore. 🦈🦈🦈

Lolaandbehold · 18/12/2024 10:41

I think this is so sad. But I'm speaking from my own perspective. I love a big noisy, Christmas with turkey, presents, family, a dog walk in the morning etc.

But as a PP said, you do you. If this is your family's idea of a perfect Christmas then that's great. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Heboughtmeadishwasherandcoffeeperculator · 18/12/2024 10:41

I’m only on page one but this has got to be made up.

We are very selfish with our Christmas, don’t particularly like hosting or going anywhere but there is absolutely no way your teenagers have said to you they don’t want the presents that you have already bought for them and they want to sit on the sofa and eat a salad all day.

This sounds heavily influenced by an adult that can’t be arsed and Kids that sound like they don’t have an option.

Aposterhasnoname · 18/12/2024 10:43

So you’re 31 and your mother is late eighties, so she was mid fifties when she had you? Or was that another adoption?

PandoraSox · 18/12/2024 10:43

Snugglemonkey · 18/12/2024 08:19

And been hosting widowed mother and mil for 20+ years.

And OP's DM is in her late 80s. Which means she had OP in her late 50s...

TheCatterall · 18/12/2024 10:44

@PoliticalPossum Ithink it’s fucking awesome.

me and my son decided to do this a few times over the years and have lived the relaxed change of pace.

I do not understand why so many are coming at you for daring to do something different that you all sound like you are looking forward to!

I think so many folks feel they have to live up to some Christmas model of behaviour and expectations that anything different blows their minds.

and I love me a salad. Fattoush is yummy. I make tabbouleh regularly and throw all sorts onto the plate with it as it’s just my happy place. Currently making a white bean dip - don’t know what to call it. It’s hummas but with white beans not chickpeas?!

Anyway have a fabulous time and may the Mothers sherry be perfect.

LostTheMarble · 18/12/2024 10:44

TorroFerney · 18/12/2024 10:35

You’ve been hosting your mum and mum in law for 20 years , so since you were 11?

To be fair, that would explain the Christmas salad. At 11, there’s only a limited amount you can get/make at that age. Though surely the OP’s children should have long started hosting themselves by 15/16!

Is nobody else here worrying about the imaginary SIL? If 6 imaginary people cancelled on me for a massive (40+!) party that presumably takes months to arrange and cater for, with a week to go, I'd be livid.

Especially if it was to eat a fucking salad

Edited

No, she's dancing a jig in her imaginary banqueting hall sized kitchen, because she can now remove all the salad and a lot of the alcohol from the party food list. Also, her Scrabble set is safe.

PandoraSox · 18/12/2024 10:47

Are the salads huge@PoliticalPossum ?

LostTheMarble · 18/12/2024 10:49

Wed all love an imaginary Christmas where our darling children proclaimed they simply don’t need presents this year (despite most of us having already lost sleep and most of our money providing said gifts a week before Christmas). However, outside of this little fantasy of Its A Wonderful Life of Salad, most of us will be doing what the op does. Just with actual presents and roast potatoes. They aren’t special (just very bad at maths).

Don’t worry, she’s also projected the kids.

The salads are made with a sprinkling of the audacious and a slosh of the salacious so I expect they are as saladacious as this thread.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 18/12/2024 10:53

Mumsnet mods have just given up on this thread, haven't they?

It's probably their works Christmas party day and they've all adopted the attitude of 'fuck that and let them get on with it'. Salads and sherries all round.

nationalsausagefund · 18/12/2024 10:54

This year we decided not to do a tree and it’s SUCH a relief. Instead, we can just pile a massive salad in the bay window.

pinklemonsparkle · 18/12/2024 10:56

BEST THREAD EVAAAR!

😂😂😂

starfishmummy · 18/12/2024 10:59

Sounds great. We still do presents (but they are modest compared to most) and usually have nice food but just slob around at home.

This year, the time has come though that the in laws are no longer going away so their DD is doing Christmas dinner and we are invited. First time in well over a decade. I've already asked DH if I can take a book as I know some Xmas TV is planned!!

Having such a horrid week and this made me laugh out loud. Honestly I hope the thread stands because it’s genuinely hilarious to see how crackers this time of year sends other people and not just me. I’d not be so cruel to wrap up a massive salad for my kids but apparently it makes for a better Christmas - I might suggest it next year 🤣.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/12/2024 11:01

Sorry you’re having a hard time, @LostTheMarble . Hope things get better for you very soon.

Maybe treat yourself to a Christmas salad for lunch, I’m sure OP won’t mind you sharing the joy?

What a great idea! I might string a few lettuce leaves up as decorations, then we can eat them on Christmas day. Sustainable and delicious.

That indeed does sound fine, however is it not a bit late in the day to decide this? Surely you have made arrangements to see people and already bought presents?

Or perhaps they haven't ?? 'Well done' to those kids I say, I can think of no better way to spend Christmas Day.
