I want to be Marina Hyde.

Fair enough, I had to google her. @CurlewKate why her though?

username299 · 17/12/2024 15:17

I think she's a bit of a twat.

CurlewKate · 17/12/2024 15:20

For many, many reasons. Her journalism is sharp and funny and angry when it should be angry. You should read her on the post office scandal. But in particular today because she said to her 10 year old daughter in Sephora “you are literally inviting the boot of the patriarchy onto your neck"

@username299 "I think she's a bit of a twat"

Why?

@username299 "I think she's a bit of a twat"

Why?

She comes across as a bit 'pick me'. She used to be quite scathing towards feminism as well.

Why did she bring her in there in the first place? Also, since when does the patriarchy have a boot, I thought that was just fascism 🤔

CurlewKate · 17/12/2024 17:06

@username299 ". She used to be quite scathing towards feminism as well."

Really? That surprises me. Any sources?

Yes her Guardian articles.

Thameslock · 17/12/2024 17:38

I never want to grow up! 64 now and haven’t done so yet🤦‍♂️🤪

Yes her Guardian articles.

Do provide sources.

MinistryofThyme · 17/12/2024 18:07

I think she’s brilliant.

I'm not going through all her Guardian articles to provide you with sources. She writes a few articles a week has done for over 20 years.

So why did she take her 10 year old to Sephora?

Sounds like a twat.

CurlewKate · 17/12/2024 19:47

@username299 I have read a lot of her articles over the years and I have never noticed her being "scathing about feminism". I also haven't noticed her being particularly "pick me". So unless you can outline what she has said I have to assume you're doing that strange "let's put down successsful women" thing that some people like to do. Or the equally strange "somebody like someone so saying I don't will be clever" thing some people like to do.....

@AmICrazyToEvenBother "

I would imagine it might be quite difficult to take a 10 year old past Sephora.

She was talking about ‘Sephora teens’ on the podcast she does with Richard Osman which came out today. I don’t remember if she said she had taken her daughter or was just discussing Sephora and the whole ‘adult skincare being marketed to children’ thing with her but she made some excellent points, one of which was the boot of patriarchy comment.

I only know her through the podcast but I really like her on that.

Yes, and I’ve read many of them without ever coming across anything to suggest she’s ‘scathing about feminism’. Which is why I asked if you had specific instances or were just generalising with no basis.

It's called having a different opinion. You'll come across it on an open forum. I've been reading the Guardian for 40 years and have read many of her articles. She used to be quite aggressively anti feminist and I haven't noticed her talking about being gender critical either, unlike some of her colleagues.

If she's feminist now, she's changed her tune. It's possible to have an opinion on a journalist without it being exclusively about her sex.

The basis is me having read many of her articles over the last twenty or so years.
