What's your current work gripe?

Come on, let's get these work frustrations off our chests!

Here's mine...

One of my colleagues is incredibly lazy, he completes work in the fastest time possible, but has zero attention to detail so the person who picks it up ends up spending more time correcting it than he did creating it.

He also never takes any accountability for his faults and is always looking to blame something/someone else, whether a computer failure, a technical glitch, not getting clear instructions.... argh! Not only that, he's constantly complaining about his work and personal life and is just a drain.

He keeps saying he wants a higher paid role. I wish he'd hurry up and find one.

My gripe is working alongside someone who thinks she has to micro manage me, even though we are the same level

Goldenphoenix · 16/12/2024 23:00

Zero strategic direction from upper management. Everyone working in silos and not talking to each other. A new line manager who is making me feel like I haven't been doing a good job. Toxic, bullying atmosphere and low morale. Not enjoying it at all!

Also - and I'm on a roll here - the stupid things they put on at huge expense to 'lure' people into the office. We have a hybrid work policy but also a very expensive to maintain office but instead of just saying 'ok, in the office two days out of five' or similar they pussyfoot about spending money on pizzas, or ex-rugby league players coming in to do a talk, or coffee vans, or making Christmas wreaths. Don't bother. Just tell people you want them in the office and pay us all a bit more out of the gigantic coffee-van-and-rugby-player budget.

Why don't they just move to a cheaper and smaller office?

Currently trying to performance manage several lazy fuckers that have got away with piss poor performance for years due to the previous manager not dealing with it. It's really, really draining. For me, not them, they don't appear to give a shiny shit. Ultimately they'll have their contracts terminated, hopefully.

People who ignore emails because they're managing their work load and do it to 'protect themselves' and put their 'well-being first'. How about considering others wellbeing when they are waiting for responses in order to do their job properly? Whether you get 10 or 50 emails a day, it's part of your job and the fact someone has emailed you means they need your response!!

There's an over promoted arse hole in our place whose out of office states that he won't have time to read his emails on his return to the office, please resend when he's back from leave.
What the actual fuck.

“Did you proof read this before sending it to me this time Graham? Because last time I spent an awfully long time making corrections.”

if he says yes and it’s clear when you start looking at it that he hasn’t, I’d throw it back to him with “I think you’ve sent me the wrong version. You said you proof read it but I’ve already found 3 mistakes in the opening paragraph”. 🤭

this is of course the imaginary scenario that I wouldn’t be able to actually say/ do in real life, as the Grahams of this world that you have described would behave absolutely awfully if challenged and not sure id have the strength to deal with him.

I feel for you, I really do!

Shit data. Quantity over quality.
Muggins here is sick of tidying up other people's mess.

Shit data, shit systems, extremely limited IT Developers resources, no money for new systems, half of the City standing on the hard coded excel spreadsheets 😂😂

NearlyNewHip · 17/12/2024 08:44

Sharing an open plan office space with colleagues who do a slightly different job, so where I am slogging my guts out to get deadline done before the office closing for Christmas, they're happily chatting away trying to show me Google pictures of what they're buying for Christmas and giggling that im in such a bad mood, 'dont i know it's nearly Christmas!!!???'...makes my blood boil

Startingagainandagain · 17/12/2024 08:54

Being hired to do part-time hours but being expected to take on a workload that would require at a very minimum a full time employee or more realistically an entire team.

Too much back-stabbing and politics and employees with disabilities being treated poorly. And this is a charity that supports vulnerable people...

Littleoakhorn · 17/12/2024 09:05

A new boss, parachuted in from elsewhere in the business who doesn’t understand what he’s micromanaging and is extremely pleased with himself but very light on listening.

A mind-bogglingly negative team member who, once started, will simply not stop talking. I mean just drones on and on and on until it’s time for a smoke.

Isometimeswonder · 17/12/2024 09:10

Scottishskifun · 16/12/2024 20:16

When work colleagues are going off on holidays and rather then either complete their workload in advance or hand it over to another team member they simply send it in an email to the group and say can someone pick this up the deadline is Christmas eve...... Christmas period is my busiest time at work and had 3 colleagues do this exact thing!

I would be forwarding all those emails to their manager stating clearly that they need to find a solution as you have no time.

hopelessmary · 17/12/2024 22:53

@Radionowhere he might as well write in his out of office 'I can't be arsed to read any emails that you sent when I return. Please resend if you really have to and I might be arsed to read them then!'

sen teacher here too - there so much swept under the carpet. My gripe is our students sit in mainstream and no work is adapted for them and once they look the part in the uniform they are ‘included’ but they are not in reality 😩

twohotwaterbottles · 17/12/2024 23:04

Fucking. Bastard. Hateful. Microsoft Teams. It has ruined my life. My colleagues are lovely however.

rockingbird · 17/12/2024 23:06

providing 'just the hard data requested' for someone else to take the limelight on a marketing project I've spent hours analysing.. then asking me to make it look pretty! Fuck off luv - content marketing at its finest!

Back in the 1970s we had streaming so that kids who struggled got help and the brighter ones could progress at their pace .

TheNewElite · 17/12/2024 23:20

A manager who loves the sound of her own voice, talks over people at meetings, always puts herself in the spotlight about how brilliant she is, does the hi visibility tasks for more glory, makes our online team calls even longer than they need to be because she’s sidetracked again talking about other stuff or herself again. Can be quite abrupt and rude not sure if she realises or cares and thinks she has a great reputation and standing yet she’s not quite as up there as she seems to think as I have discovered. And breathe….

OddBallNumber5 · 17/12/2024 23:22

Being encouraged to lead a project but then when I start delegating and trying to lead it, getting pulled back by my line manager as ‘these tasks you can do yourself.’

On incompetent team member who just seems protected.

poor communication

Not enough staff, too many patients. Not enough money for bank staff… staff get burnt out and run down, staff off sick… not enough staff. And so it goes on…

Same in my ward / hospital 😢

ChronicallySleepy · 18/12/2024 06:30

One of my colleagues refuses to do parts of her job.

Another colleague micromanages everyone.

The building is falling apart and has leaks everywhere, nothing better than asbestos infused water dripping on us all day.

Danceswithweasels · 18/12/2024 06:43

New manager, new to managing. Needs to have a team meeting to discuss everything, our calendars are now full of pointless meetings. At the meetings and in subsequent emails marked URGENT she repeatedly tells us that we need to prioritise community based work and tasks, which we can't do as we are required to attend a barrage of meetings she has organised 5 days week........... We have pointed this out but apparently we need to be more "flexible"

Waiting for a response from our useless head of HR.

Ive been waiting since MAY, I’ve chased on multiple occasions but they just don’t bother with even a holding email.

Being head of HR I have no one to escalate to apart from the Board directors. So 2nd Jan I shall be doing just that!

They're probably waiting for a response from the BoD or whoever is their boss.

This may be the case but not acknowledging any communication at all but simply ignoring it is hardly professional. That’s my gripe.

Bigredcombine · 18/12/2024 07:38

Bad cash flow management. Terrible communication from our finance manager. She also happens to go awol at this time of year (our busiest period).
