Barring disasters (like the main oven conking out - thank you Christmas 2006)
what time do you aim for?

It's usually 2pm for us.

1ish so we can go for a walk before its completely dark but I'm not overly strict about it.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 16/12/2024 12:01

If we're having it at home with just us and my grown-up children, it's served anywhere between 4 and 6 PM; usually on the later side. Suits us much better - no stress in the morning, we don't have to be up at the crack of dawn prepping food and trying to stuff down an entire dinner a few hours later. I'm also Danish and at home Christmas dinner's always had in the evening, so that's how I always did it when the children were little.

If we're at in laws it's at 2 PM. They'd have it at 12 if it were up to them but since we're the ones who do all the planning of menu, buying for it and cooking, we've tweaked it a bit to suit better.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 16/12/2024 12:02

We have canapés and a cocktail or two at 3pm as guests arrive then a main and dessert around 5/5.30pm.
Cheeseboard appears at 9pm ish alongside Christmas cake & mince pies.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 16/12/2024 12:13

Yes @OatFlatWhiteForMePlease that's very similar to what we do when we're hosting. All very relaxed that way.

slightlydistrac · 16/12/2024 12:18

With small dc it was about 1-ish. These days probably 2pm - 2.30.

twistyizzy · 16/12/2024 12:24

Between 2-3pm. Horses to bring in at 4pm so need to be done by then. Have a croissant breakfast + seafood/salad nibbles around 11am
As a child it was always 6-7pm

Jellycatspyjamas · 16/12/2024 12:30

@rightoguvnor we have a cooked breakfast and then dinner around 6, it works really well for us.

Glitchymn1 · 16/12/2024 12:30

Around 2pm.

Vettrianofan · 16/12/2024 12:31

2pm. I want dishes all done by 3.30pm so I get to relax for the day.

Gettingbysomehow · 16/12/2024 12:33

No later than 1pm. I don't want people snacking all day then not wanting to eat the food I cooked or even worse being drunk.

Oreosareawful · 16/12/2024 12:35

1pm here too.
Then leftovers with bread rolls and crisps etc in the evening if anyone is peckish.

VillageFete · 16/12/2024 13:16

Eating out this year, booked for 12:30pm.

It works well for us, as it gives us the afternoon for drinks, board games and early evening nibbles.

When I eventually host again, i’d aim for 2pm.

Decafflatteplease · 16/12/2024 13:33

All meals normal time here otherwise dc get unsettled. So breakfast around 8-9, lunch around 12.30 and main meal around 5.30. then DH and I will have cold cuts and cheese and wine around 9pm once dc asleep

RabbitsRock · 16/12/2024 13:37

Around 2 then DH has posh cheeses & crackers for supper & I have a cold turkey, stuffing & breadsauce sarnie with cold roasties if I have room. Quite fancy smoked salmon & scrambled eggs on sourdough for breakfast.

Nc546888 · 16/12/2024 13:43

My family always do 3-4pm and I hate it.

if I could decide it would be 1pm!!!

WinchSparkle80 · 16/12/2024 13:49

Between 1-2pm then cheese n biscuits, cold meats etc around 7ish.

skippy67 · 16/12/2024 13:57

Whenever it's ready. Usually between 3 and 4pm. No stress!

stopringingme · 16/12/2024 14:01

Aim for 1pm.

The dishwasher is filled as we go, and then it is put on after we have eaten.

If anyone is hungry later, they can eat leftovers or get themselves something.

Pascha · 16/12/2024 14:02

Around 5pm. Ain't no way im starting dinner prep til at least 2pm.

Nanny31 · 16/12/2024 14:04

3pm!

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 16/12/2024 14:23

5ish, by candlelight. Grazing on chocolate and pastries for breakfast keep us going till then (though the kids might grab lunch).

DilemmaDelilah · 16/12/2024 15:46

1pm. Time to get everything done after church if anyone wants to go, then just time to clear the table and get the dishwasher on before the Kings speech then present time! (Stockings first thing in the morning).

TeamMandrake · 16/12/2024 16:57

Pascha · 16/12/2024 14:02

Same. By 3pm, I'm ready to disappear into the kitchen with a glass of wine to start cooking (i.e. shoving preprepared food into the oven), but I'm not missing anything before that.

Pascha · 16/12/2024 17:31

@TeamMandrake we're having roast beef but, barring peeling some spuds, it'll all be fairly straightforward as any Sunday roast is.

Soccermumamir · 16/12/2024 17:33

Between 12:30pm - 1pm
