Interview on my day off? WWYD

AuntieMillicent · 16/12/2024 09:38

I have applied for a promotion, I currently work 4 days a week and work have scheduled my interview on my day off.

I am afraid that if I point this out to them it will look as if I am inflexible or difficult...but I do have plans that day. I can potentially reschedule them. Or should I go to the interview without fuss to show willing?

Alternatively it may look as if I am too soft if I don't say 'Nope, not coming in on my day off!'

Not trying to make excuses but I am a bit addled today anyway (painkillers and tiredness) hence asking for advice!

If u want the job u go to interview!
Not sure what the quandary is tbh

Nomorecoconutboosts · 16/12/2024 09:41

If my plans were movable I would move them. Perhaps one or more of the panel will be totally unaware it’s your day off?

petedicks · 16/12/2024 09:41

Do you want the job or not?

If you applied for a job at another company you'd have to book the time off or have it on your day off.

I think you'd be unreasonable to ask to change it sorry. It's not like they are asking you to come in to work on your day off, it's an interview for a promotion you want.

SkaneTos · 16/12/2024 09:42

I would go to the interview.

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 16/12/2024 09:42

You go to the interview.

SoftPillowAllNight · 16/12/2024 09:42

Switch your working days that week to accommodate the interview

They're people I work directly with, so they should do but I suspect It's just an oversight.

Don't be afraid. This isn't an ultimatum situation. You can politely ask if there is any room for flexibility of when the interview is held, because it's your non working day. But that you can reschedule plans.

Be prepared for the interview panel to only he available that day.

But otherwise, it's OK to politely enquire, as long as you're not saying a blunt I can't do that date.

If I was your manager / interviewer, I would probably have forgotten that it was your day off and I would be irritated that you felt you couldn't communicate to me about it

I doubt that would be possible, It's all co-ordinated to out pattern of work and how many of us are available for clients.

If you didn't already work there the interview would be offered on whatever day suits the business, not your personal schedule. Why should you be any different?

In answer to your question, yes you will look incredibly 'difficult' if you ask for everyone on the panel and all the other candidates to reschedule the interview day, just so that you can take the time out of a working day.

Thank you for the advice all.

I have clients that day but I can re-arrange them and will do.

"Hi x - I've got the interview invite, thank you. That's actually my day off and I have plans, so I thought it was worth checking whether there's any chance we can reschedule to a different day that week? If not then I will rearrange my existing plans and make sure I am available to log on / come in for that time".

Saying nope, I'm not coming in will pretty much guarantee you don't get the job imo.

There is a mid ground - just ask, in a polite and professional way, if the interview could be moved as X is your non-working day. However, if not possible then that's fine, you can move some things around.

HaddawayAndShite · 16/12/2024 09:50

If you really wanted the job it wouldn't even be a question. I've interviewed internally literally on the way to a festival (my partner was sat in the car park in the camper so we could leave straight after). My last external interview was the day before our wedding, absolutely could have done without it as we had loads to set up but I wanted the job and didn't even mention it.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 16/12/2024 09:51

Just go to the interview

Hazeby · 16/12/2024 09:53

If you think it was an oversight, then I would ask to change it but make it clear I was perfectly willing to come if they couldn’t.

If I were your boss, I’d think you were a bit weak for not mentioning it.

I definitely assume It's an oversight, they're fairly relaxed as an employer but the flip side of this is they're quite slack when it comes to arranging things.

And yes, that's what I was wondering too-whether I'll seem to lack assertiveness for not mentioning it.

If you were going for another job you'd take time off wouldn't you? Maybe they don't want to interview you when you're actually supposed to be working.

It's probably an oversight though. I'd ask if it could be moved but make clear I could still attend if not.

Are they aware of the other job/side hustle?

Ok, if it’s most likely oversight then you should definitely mention it. It should be easy to query it without looking like you’re being difficult. Someone upthread suggested some good wording.

Good luck, I hope you get it!

Yes, very normal in the MH industry.
