Airtags

Can anyone suggest ways of attaching an Airtag to an outdoor jacket without unpicking stitching to sew it in?

We want to attach one to my son's jacket more permanently so that it doesn't drop out/ can't be easily removed and we'd like it to be discreet.

At the moment it's in the bottom of the main pocket but this isn't a good solution long term.

I have seen some adhesive holders for air tags, are these any use? Jacket is waterproof material outside and fleece lined.

ETA my son is aware of the Air tag and it was his idea - it's not to track him it's to try and help recover it if it's lost or nicked!

I'd sew it into the pocket.

Don’t AirTags notify people that they are being “followed”? If somebody stole his coat and got notifications about the AT won’t they just remove it?

Do you mean so he doesn't know?

Could you get one of those collar attachments meant for pets (they're great and not too easy to pop them out of!) and sew it into the armpit? Shouldn't be too obvious or get in the way of wearing the jacket.

Get an AirTag holder and use a large safety pin. Put it under where a coat hook usually sits and it won't be in the way.

SirHisss · 16/12/2024 19:42

Thanks. I think a safety pin would risk damaging that type of material if it caught on anything. It would also be far too easy to remove.

I want something that wont be visible so that if someone does pinch the coat and they get a notification, they wont be able to easily find and remove the tag. My hope would be that they would just discard the coat so as not to get caught and we would still be able to find it.

Are you really doing it to track a stolen coat or to track your child?

angryanderson88 · 16/12/2024 20:10

Following for ideas.

And also to remind people that the OP didn't ask for judgement as to why she needed to do this. SEN parent with a huge fear of losing a child who cannot communicate could be one of many reasons.

Although I can now see in OP's edit it js about loss/ theft rather than tracking.

I'd unpick the lining slightly and slide it in to be honest.

WorriedRelative · 16/12/2024 20:23

Pin or sew it to the lining of an inside pocket or breast pocket.

Sorry OP but I think to be sufficiently difficult to remove to deter a thief it would have to be physically sewn in to the lining, unless you are willing to superglue it into a pocket (possibly an internal one if there is one?).

It literally says in my OP that DS is aware of the Airtag and it is not being used to track him. I don't have an Apple device so I cant use it for that anyway. He will use his own Apple ID with it.
He is the one who suggested it after his last two jackets have been lost and never returned.

I have seen adhesive airtag holders on Amazon and was wondering if anyone had experience with those. I'm really not keen on the idea of unpicking stitching/ hand sewing because of the type of material. I can't afford to replace it if it ends up tearing.

It 'literally' didn't say that when you first posted. It did after you edited it.

I edited it as soon as I started the thread, before there were any replies, to avoid posts like yours.

You would only need to unpick about 2cm of lining. That's by far the easiest way.

RachelshouldhavegonetoParis · 17/12/2024 08:02

https://amzn.eu/d/8I0S0V2 I’ve got these from Amazon. One is stuck in my handbag to secure the AirTag without damaging the lining. The contact area is flexible so it stays attached to fabric then the AirTag sits in a silicon holder which sticks to the contact patch.

SirHisss · 17/12/2024 13:19

Thanks @RachelshouldhavegonetoParis

This is similar to the ones I have looked at. His jacket has a big square pocket on the front - I was thinking if I stuck one of these in at the very bottom it wouldn't be immediately noticable.

Do you find it sticks securely and the Airtag stays put ok?

The one in my bag has stayed put, it's been there for a few months now. The bit that sticks to the fabric is really flexible which I think helps.

SirHisss · 17/12/2024 13:48

Thank you! I've ordered some to try, if that fails I will have to re-think putting it in the lining.

Appreciate the suggestions everyone Smile
