Spotting while breastfeeding

Hiya I’m exclusively breastfeeding and after giving birth I bled for 3/4 weeks then spotted for a couple of weeks then nothing for a week then every few days I spotted on one or 2 occasions for a couple of weeks and then I’ve had almost 2 weeks of nothing and now have started spotting again. Has anyone else had anything similar happen I am so confused and don’t know whether I’m coming or going?

Hi, I breast for a little under 1,5 year and had horrendous periods all through. Just my luck. Asked my gynaecologist about it at the time and she mentioned endometrial atrophy, where the inner layer of your uterus gets paper thin because of hormonal imbalances and whenever you breastfeed and contract a little the walls of your uterus chafe together a little and cause spotting.

Obviously I just had full blown periods each month but the type of bleeding was definitely different (it was just plain fluid blood, zero mucus because that never built up).

Sounds like what you could have but it’s always good to get it checked out!

This sounds like what I’m going through at the moment! 5 months postpartum.
literally wipe pink mucus once or twice then nothing for weeks.

did you ever get any answers?

Hiya @LaverH no I didn’t really end up getting answers I’m almost 7 months postpartum now and since then I haven’t had a period or anything no bleeding, I thought my periods might come back as I started giving my baby some solids but nothing as of yet despite odd cramps here and there! So annoying isn’t it there’s not a lot of information out there about all this stuff!

Hiya
i have very irregular periods and with my first I had spotting whilst exclusively breastfeeding which is strange because you usually don’t get a period when EBF. I then got my period back at around 1 year postpartum although very irregular. Even if your baby has started solids, it doesn’t mean you’ll get your period back straight away as they still heavily rely on breastmilk at least until the age of 1 and even beyond! I’m still EBF my second who just turned one and even though she eats solids well, because of teething and other reasons, she breastfeeds quite regularly some days. I am still waiting for my period to return but I think other factors such as weight and diet can affect that too… stress too! Would it be worth getting your hormones tested by your doctor? Or having an examination by a gynaecologist?

also as your EBF, if you fancy a laugh or some company during those feeds, my sister and I released a podcast for EBF women! Have a listen, we’re on Apple Podcasts and Spotify

Well done for exclusively breastfeeding for 7 months! It’s so much work! I don’t feel like women are congratulated enough!

all the best!
