I'll go first. I have no interest in football but because I live with massive football fans I have very good football knowledge.

Everyone at work thinks I'm a big fan but it's only cos of dh and the kids constantly talking about footie and the sky sports being constantly on the tv.

Your turn!

I have no medical training or qualifications. But, I know far, far more about HRT, perimenopause and menopause than any GP I have ever spoken to. And I've spoken to a lot.

I know how to change the grips on a golf club. I know the difference between steel shafts and graphite shafts, and hybrids and drivers and wedges and woods. I know a golf ball is not just a golf ball. I know about bogeys and birdies and what hand you’d wear your golf glove on. I know about club etiquette and how the earth will stop turning and the sky will fall in if someone tries to tee off without wearing a collared shirt. I am interested in none of this stuff.

From a misspent youth, I know a lot about bikers and MCs and which patches mean you do not wanting to be messing about with them.

I know all sorts of things about cars and secrets of the motor trade. I do not drive.

I know the Welsh national anthem, various obscure Welsh folklore (Mari Lwyd anyone?) and how to pronounce words with no vowels in them. I am not Welsh and don’t live there.

I know quite a lot about Lord of The Rings even though I didn't get past the first chapter of it because I found it boring. Firstly, at university I found myself making friends with a lot of Tolkien geeks and going to Tolkien Society events. Then I married DH who is a huge fan and regularly watches the interminable films so even though I'm doing something else, bits have filtered through to my brain.

I seem to know lots of random stuff which seems to surprise people (and me). I have a good memory for odd things and subjects, so can recall random facts.

An absolutely ridiculous amount about car maintenance, changing head gaskets and formula 1. (Dad).

Football.

Islam. (Ex)

I know what it's like to have your fingerprints taken by the cops.

<caveat - my car had been broken into and they needed to know which prints were mine>

At various times I've known far more about dinosaurs, sharks, octonaughts & various kids favourite characters than one needs to know.

i currently know about every pot hole, bit of road works & utter twat on the road than I ever need or want to know. the price I pay for a relationship with someone that drives all day.

AutumnNanny · 15/12/2024 02:04

Ex - cricket!

American retirement/pension vehicles (401k, Roth IRA etc.). I'm in the UK, but got really into a personal finance podcast from the US and learned a lot... Doesn't directly translate into UK rules so pretty useless! 😅

Angrymum22 · 15/12/2024 02:15

I have no real interest in cricket but can change the grip on a bat and can score. DS played a lot of cricket growing up and I got roped in.
i know the offside rule for football despite hating the game.

sandgrown · 15/12/2024 02:18

@Fireworknight I am the same . A mine of generally useless information 😂

MayaPinion · 15/12/2024 02:30

I know loads about superheroes. Not as much as the real nerdy superfans, but thanks to my son’s early fascination with them I could easily give you a 10 minute monologue on why Iron Man is better than Captain America.

CydonianKnight · 15/12/2024 02:47

I have excellent general knowledge skills through years spent at my grandparents at weekends when I was a kid. I would get bored and read their encyclopaedias! I also used to read the dictionary. I didn’t know how much I had absorbed until I started going to a pub quiz with some friends. I know things I thought lots more people would know. Thank you old style encyclopaedias!

I know a lot about the children of Susannah Luster (Lister/Lester, later Skuse) who lived in a small village in Gloucestershire from the 1850s. I am not related to her, but her oldest son married my great-great grandmother so is my step g-g-grandfather I suppose. She had four children before she married, four after she married a widower much older than herself (I csn tell you about him too), and I fell down a rabbit hole.
