*trigger warning* child abuse and murder. Sentences seem lenient

How on Earth do you only get 10 years for letting someone abuse and kill your child? How do you only get 26 years for such a sustained brutal campaign?

Scott Jeff got 26 years.
Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell got 10 years.

I suppose the real questions are what is the purpose of prison and what causes people to (permit) harm and to (permit) murder of a child. I do feel that those sentences are very light though, especially the 10 years.

Mother and boyfriend wheeled body of toddler around Ipswich after murder

Chelsea Gleason-Mitchell and Scott Jeff, 24, jailed after Isabella Jonas-Wheildon endured ‘callous’ campaign of abuse

It’s disgusting, especially her sentence. They wheeled that poor little mite’s dead body around in a buggy for days laughing and joking!

RIP Isabella, I’m so sorry little one.

I can see that somebody could make a damnable and awful decision like walking around with a body in a buggy if they found themselves in the position of being with a dead body.

I can't see how people get themselves into the position having killed a child. That's not terrible decision-making.

To be out laughing and drinking. It just staggers me.

MaggieBsBoat · 13/12/2024 20:20

I am just hearing about this. If you think about it, you can say the wrong thing on twitter and get a third of the sentence that the mother did.
I’m a lawyer and I’m appalled.

Like I said not 2 days ago on the Sara Sharif thread, I wish we had the death penalty.

That would be done out of vengeance though. I thought the view generally put forth was the death penalty doesn't act as a deterrent to crime? If Gleason-Mitchell and Jeff were facing the death penalty they would have only made a harder effort at covering up Isabella's death. She would still have been abused and she would still be dead.

If you do want it done out of vengeance that takes us to the question of what's the purpose of sentences? Is it indeed vengeance?

This is such a horrific case. He'd been in Isabella's life for such a short time. So it's not like there was years of control where the mother was isolated/dependant etc. It was a matter of weeks.

The video of them wheeling the pushchair around with her dead body inside, laughing and joking 😣

StrawberryFlowers · 14/12/2024 09:22

They might only get half that. Both will be young enough to have more kids which is worrying.

HornyHornersPinger · 14/12/2024 18:36

@LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole
Not from vengeance. Just that the perpetrators have no place in society, and certainly don't deserve to be housed, fed clothed, kept warm, educated etc. That's something that can't always be guaranteed for people who don't commit evil crimes.
Then add on the cost to keep these prisoners. I'd rather they were exterminated, rather like they exterminated those innocent helpless children.

Scott was given a life sentence. He has to serve a minimum of 26 years and can only be released after that if the parole board grants it. If released, he will be on licence for the rest of his life.

Ah thanks for the clarification
