Have you come across many coins with King Charles on rather than Elizabeth?

I am visiting someone abroad over Christmas, and they would like if I brought any coins with the king on. I'm not looking for the fancy sets; mint coins; special coronation coins or anything like that, just everyday currency that has his head on the back rather than the queen's. I think from what I read that there are pound coins and 50p coins in circulation. Maybe others.

I almost never use cash these days so have never seen them. I did look through the coins I have, but they are all still the Queen. I'll ask at the post office if it's open - I only have a couple of days to do this, and one of them in Sunday, so that is not leaving me much time! I suspect the post office will want to sell me the mint collectors ones or something, and I just want ordinary ones if they happen to be available. I just said I'd keep my eyes open, rather than promising anything I can't deliver.

How often have you come across them in your normal life? Are they starting to take over from the Queen ones yet? Maybe the bank would have some, though I don't have much time when banks will be open (this was a last minute request).

I've not seen many with the King - just one 50p piece and a pound coin. My colleague had a £5 note but I've not seen one - we're in Scotland though, so I'd imagine there may be more in circulation in England. It might be worth asking in a post office, or even when you're in a corner shop or supermarket if they have any you could swap for.

BlossomToLeaves · 13/12/2024 16:53

I'm not generous enough to give notes, though I haven't even thought about those!

Yes corner shops etc might be worth asking for, if it seems likely that there are enough around - if they're really rare, then I don't want to put anyone out asking them to search for me. But if they are reasonably common, then it's not quite so much of an ask.

A couple of 50p and pound coins would do for the children

I've had a few fivers but haven't noticed any coins yet.

Notes yes, coins no

BloodandGlitter · 13/12/2024 16:59

We run our budget in cash and haven't seen a single one yet.

Mochudubh · 13/12/2024 17:03

None that I've noticed.

IggyAce · 13/12/2024 17:12

I work in a cash office and have seen 50ps and £1 I’ve also seen notes in all denominations. I’d probably pop in a bank and ask them.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/12/2024 17:13

Had a fiver but no coins although I barely use cash so not surprising.

AnyoneSomeone · 13/12/2024 17:25

I've seen quite a few 50ps. I do work with cash though.

greenpasturesandcloverfields · 13/12/2024 17:54

Interesting. I just emptied my purse and I have 2 coins with King Charles on them. They're both quarters though, I live in Canada, but interesting that you don't have many coins with his image on them in circulation in the UK.

WhoPutTheBomp · 13/12/2024 17:59

Yes I have Charlie Boy 50ps, they are circulating here in Shropshire.

GrandTheftWalrus · 13/12/2024 18:00

I've not seen any. I keep hoping i do when I get change but not happened yet.

PickAChew · 13/12/2024 18:04

None at all, so far, and we're likely to have noticed because DS1 is a bit of a collector and inspects everyone's change!

I bought him a presentation set for Christmas, last year because I figured the first set would be special. Definitely cost more than the face value and I forbade him from being tempted to take them out!

BobbyBiscuits · 13/12/2024 18:08

I don't think I've seen a coin for years!
I don't like the stamps with Charlie on, as he's not wearing a crown. If you're posing for a stamp or coin you should be wearing a crown! Lol.
My mum said it's because they alternate between crown and no crown each time it changes, just to make sure they look different? Not sure if I believe that. Also Charlie faces to the left on stamps whereas the queen faced to the right.
I'm sure you can get new ones from a post office or bank, if you ask nicely.

bugalugs45 · 13/12/2024 18:10

I've seen 50p, that's the only coin .
But have had a note of every denomination including £50 which I was super excited about over the last 3 or 4 months

Theunamedcat · 13/12/2024 18:12

One coin a 50p no pounds loads of notes

user1471474138 · 13/12/2024 18:12

I work in a shop and we regularly get coins with his head on, 50ps are the most common - if we weren’t busy I’d probably have a quick look in the till for you so might be worth an ask

viques · 13/12/2024 18:16

On a slightly different track I just found a half sheet of really ancient Christmas stamps in the general box of Christmas Assorted. Luckily before I tore them up I double checked on line and they are still ok to use, at any time, not just Christmas. Happy Days!

Haven’t seen any coins or notes btw, though to be fair I haven’t been looking.

mum2jakie · 13/12/2024 18:16

Notes but no Charlie coins yet

BlossomToLeaves · 13/12/2024 18:23

Thanks all.
Sounds like it's worth asking at the bank on Monday then, or at a couple of shops that seem less busy (hmm maybe early Sunday morning!).
A couple of 50p would be enough if I come across them.

Oh aye I've had a stamp with Charles on it. My oldest took great delight in pointing it out.

TotallyTwisted · 14/12/2024 00:50

I honestly can't remember the last time I had any coin! I don't think I've ever seen one with Charles on it.
