Do your employers know if you've been called up or if you've been told you don't need to go in?

No - the jury service don’t know who your employer is. You would need to tell them what dates you will be away from work.

You show them the letter, or at least that's what my husband and son did.

You show your employer the letter in advance, then you get it stamped if you actually have to go in (which at my work you have to show your manager).
