How often do you buy new makeup?

I wear makeup but not all the time - so for work and when I see people in person (WFH a lot) - probably about half the time. On average I probably buy one new bit every 6 months ish. Just a few months ago I finally replaced the eyeshadow I've been using since sixth form (I'm 34 now!). I do get through a bottle of foundation about every 9 months though, and mascara maybe every year or so.

Is this normal? I think my mum is similar but maybe we just get through makeup at a ridiculously slow rate?
If we are normal then I struggle to see how makeup companies are still in business haha, but they obviously are!

If you buy a lot more makeup, do you finish it? Or just use it a couple of times then get rid?

I don't think there's any such thing as 'normal' when it comes to buying make up, so long as what you're doing doesn't leave you miserable or in debt. I love make up and have a fairly big collection. I probably buy one or two new things most months, usually budget stuff from Superdrug, with a few high end bits from time to time. Sometimes I'll do a self-imposed ban for several months when I realize that I have plenty to be getting on with!

If you're happy with what you have and don't feel the need to buy more, then you're fine

How big is your eyeshadow set if you wear makeup 50% of your time yet this has lasted you over 15 years 😁

I only wear makeup at weekends really and tend to buy something new every six months or so, usually Clinique so not mega expensive but not cheap either. Whenever the old one run out basically.

I get through a tube of bb cream every couple of months, and I try and remember to replace mascara regularly, but everything else lasts me years.

I couldn't tell you the last time I bought any (I'm talking pre-2020)......or wore any for that matter! Most of mine came as free samples with Clinique skin care.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/12/2024 10:16

That eyeshadow must have been a germ fest!

OhBling · 13/12/2024 10:21

I wear make up regularly, albeit not heavily so I suspect I'm a middle of the road user in the bigger scheme of things.

My foundation gets replaced at least once every 4 months or so. Eye shadows I seldom finish (except for my cream stick from Bobbi Brown and even that still lasts about 18 months!), but I do like to buy new ones to try different looks (I have a gorgeous palette I've been lusting after on its way as a Christmas gift to me as I type. <excited hand wring>). Mascara lasts me about 4-6 months too and then has to be repurchased. So those are things I'm buying fairly regularly.

Blusher I buy seldom as it seems to last forever although sadly one of my favourites is about to run out and it's a limited edition so won't be able to replace it.

I wear the same lipstick most days but I have about 3 tubes of it so I don't replace them very often! I think if I was more adventurous with lipstick though Id' definitely buy it more often to try new colours and looks, as I do with my eye shadow.

I bought some Laura Gellar mineral foundation and eyeshadow recently in the black Friday sale. I hadn't bought any eyeshadow for about 6 years. The set I have just thrown still had loads left, I don't use it that often.

Haha it was a standard little Rimmel Due with 2 colours which are about a square inch each!

Probably was pretty germy lol...
I didn't actually finish that one, although the metal at the bottom was clearly visible. It crumbled out after being shaken up while travelling!

@OhBling I can foresee my blusher lasting forever too, I bought a new one for our wedding 5 years ago, but it still looks almost new. I just use one "dab" one each cheek though so not much!

I bought some for my wedding in 2011. It's all still going on the 1-2 times a year I use it.

WalterdelaMare · 13/12/2024 10:31

I love makeup and follow a few MUA on IG. Hence, I’m frequently influenced to buy. I probably buy about 4 things per month.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/12/2024 10:47

I most recently upgraded to waterproof mascara for funerals in 2022.
The tinted moisteriser I bought about 8 years ago, so that's quite new
The eyeshadows are 15-20 years old

I did bin the 90s stuff

I don't wear it much and I'm certainly not replacing it annually for the sake of one or two uses per year.

I recently unfollowed several MUAs and makeup reviewers on YouTube because I was just getting too enabled 😄With things like foundation I just buy when I need, but I go through phases of buying eyeshadow palettes and then getting buyer's remorse because I already have way too many. I do love experimenting and creating looks, so it's not a waste as such, but I really have more eyeshadow than I'll ever use now, so I've declared 2025 a no-buy year for eyeshadow.

Doggymummar · 13/12/2024 10:49

I binned mine recently and started over. Most of them only last 12m after opening some less. Lipstick goes smelly as does mascara. I just have cheap stuff now, Elf, so it's cheap to replace when it's gone bad.

greenlat · 13/12/2024 11:17

I wear makeup daily and I only need to buy some about 4 times a year. I tend to use it up and don't bin it before then, and I find it lasts for a year at least. I only reapply lipstick through the day, everything else I put on once in the morning. I've got lots of eyeshadows and palettes which I've had for years and look and smell fine.

Lottapianos · 13/12/2024 12:14

'I just have cheap stuff now, Elf, so it's cheap to replace when it's gone bad'

Cheap, but excellent 👌

buybuysellsell · 13/12/2024 12:25

Just when it runs out really. I have one of each of what I need:

Tinted moisturiser
Foundation
Concealer
Blusher
Eyebrow pencil
Eyeliner
Eyeshadow
Mascara

I have some old eyeshadow palettes and a few lipsticks for whenever I want to jazz things up eg for a party, but the rest of time I just use up what I've got then replace it.

ffsgloria · 13/12/2024 12:26

I wear make up every day but very minimal. I replace my mascara every 3 months or so, everything else much less frequently.
