Friday 13th and other superstitions

Do you avoid doing things or booking events purely based on a date?

Do you "observe" other superstitions - eg.
Detour around a ladder to avoid walking under it, say good morning Mr Magpie, do pinch punch at the 1st of the month?

My sister's obstetrician did not offer CS on this date so her child was born on 14th!

The only one I do (for some reason!) is touch wood when I've said something that could be tempting fate. Although, if there's no wood around, I won't be worried! I'm not very superstitious.

I do the touch wood thing and the magpie thing. Magpies give me the absolute creeps so I much prefer to see two. Utter nonsense really. Just realised it's the 13th today. I've got a lot to do so won't be giving it much thought!

I think the only two I actually observe unthinkingly are not bringing hawthorn into the house and throwing a pinch of spilled salt over my left shoulder.

Oh, and no umbrellas up indoors. And never crossing knives.

Fine with magpies, walking under ladders, 13 for dinner etc.

I do the touch wood thing and always rub my fingers together over my shoulder after picking up salt. If I put a piece of clothing on inside out I either carry on wearing it or take it off and put another similar thing on the right way out, and ‘stir with a knife, stir up strife’.
Magpies are one of my favourite birds, they are so smart in their crisp iridescent black and white feathers.

trying not to think about the Friday 13th thing today - ds is flying off on a school skiing trip!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/12/2024 09:12

No - except if it's something like not walking under a ladder which is usually just common sense!

I used to be incredibly superstitious of everything. It was becoming really problematic so I decided to google the origins of each. It's really interesting actually, and ended my obsession.
