Help with excruciating cough

Coming through day 3 of flu / COVID type illness.
Have been deathly, and now reached the dreaded productive cough phase.
Am in agony, feel like I've a throat full of broken glass which is excruciating every time I cough and now I cannot stop. And I cannot sleep.
Anyone know of anything I can try?
Head over bowl of hot water, steaming, maybe?
All suggestions gladly received.

Obvs am dosed up on painkillers, and I do have an anaesthetic throat spray and cough mixture.

That sounds horrible.

I have

  • a thermal cup of hot water by my bed to gently sip
  • Olbas on a tissue to ease airways
  • Fisherman’s friends (the only cough sweets that work for me, for some reason)
  • covers pulled right up to my neck and a soft scarf laid on top of my throat to keep my throat warm without strangling me in my sleep
  • propped up in bed (don’t attempt to sleep flat)

In the daytime yes you can use steam - and also keep the air in the house warm and moist (eg radiators on low with damp laundry on would prevent dry air) and keep an endless flow of home-made honey and lemon mixed with hot water (don’t use boiling as it destroys the vit c in the lemon).

If it’s productive take an expectorant medicine.

The main thing is rest - ideally bed rest. Turn the phone off and close your eyes and drift

Keep up your fluid, take Paracetamol or nurofen as directed.

My son gets a very painful cough when his viral asthma is not managed, or if he has an infection of pneumonia.

I would be going to the doctor to have it check, may be an infection or even pneumonia.

Take care, warm tea, snuggle in a blanket and stay warm and call that doctor !!
