Melatonin

I've been insomniac since the Summer and out of desperation I bought some melatonin.
I bought 12mg ones and although I'm sleeping better I suspect these are too strong. If you take melatonin what dose are you taking and if you're insomniac have you found anything else that works please?

I take 5mg

Thanks for the reply. I knew these were too strong a dose. Do you feel a bit groggy the next day on 5mg?

Try a lower dose and magnesium as well.

DS14 is on a long term script and only takes 2.5mg. Definitely start with 5mg and see how you go, 12mg is a pretty hefty dose! Drowsy antihistamines are also worth a try, like cetirizine. I find magnesium spray helps too.

I give 16 yr old DD 5mg, I occasionally take them too if I'm going thru a period of struggling to go to sleep. Have never felt groggy in the morning, although DD reports vivid dreams

Thank you for your replies!
I take magnesium glycinate for my restless legs and it used to knock me out but since a stint in hospital and a stressful year ever since they haven't been working for me hence the melatonin.
I've ordered some 5mg ones but they come from US so will take a while. I will have to halve these ones I have because I've felt like a wool headed zombie all day..mind you after not sleeping properly all year maybe that's my normal state 😂

I just take 1mg usually and that's enough to get me to sleep and not feel groggy. Very occasionally I'll take 2mg but I think 12mg wouldi knock me out for 24 hours!

I thought stronger would be better and bought 10mg ones from America but I’ve realised through trial and error that they’re far too strong and now I take a quarter of one. so 2.5mg, and they’re wonderful.

the circadian slow release ones are the best but they’re expensive.

CaptainBeanThief · 11/12/2024 20:37

I'm prescribed 6mg by psychiatrist. I do feel quite groggy but I'm on a cocktail of medication so I wouldn't know if it was that, that would cause the morning grogginess

Are yours from Piping rock? I saw the 10mg ones too but why would they sell such strong ones if they are too much.
I felt like a zombie all yesterday. I broke one in half last night (so 6mg) and felt better today but kept waking up last night.
Mind you I still woke up on the 12mg..

Yeah, piping rock.

I found I kept waking up when the dosage was too high, maybe try a much smaller dose. I don’t take every night, probably only a couple of times a month. Another useful tool in my arsenal for when I’ve got myself in to a shitty sleep phase is OTC co codamol but that’s not something you really want to get in the habit of taking that often as it can’t be additive. It really does work though!

Hi

I have just seen this post and wondered where you managed to buy them from. I've bought some from the US but they clearly don't have much melatonin in them . Any advice on where best to buy them? Thanks
