Is this common after antibiotics??

Looking for some advice,

I was prescribed antibiotics last Friday for a chest infection. In the first instance I was given augmenten but it made me violently ill so switched to amoxicillin.

Finished up yesterday and in the last 24 hours I have had terrible diarrhoea. Nothing stays in my stomach for more than half an hour. I have no pain or fever so I’m thinking it’s some effect of the antibiotics rather than a secondary infection?

This has never happened before and it’s absolutely awful! Just wondering how long I should expect this to last or is there anything I can do to help it resolve?

Thanks in advance for any help

It's one of the most common side effects of amoxicillin

I’ve been on amoxicillin in the past and have never had anything like this hence my confusion

Oh this is weird - I had Amoxicillin in January. Not the first time I've had it, never any issues before, but my god, the diarrhoea afterwards was exactly the same.

Don't want to terrify you, but this is going to - sorry - it went on for NINE MONTHS!

I'm still not right, but it has calmed down. I pooed in so many pots for the GP it's embarrassing. Nada. Saw a fabulous consultant and still nada apart from 'antibiotic side effect'.

Stock up on Imodium - there's a cheap version on Amazon. Consultant said it's OK to take as much and as regularly as needed.

Yes. Sickness too. It's why they warn women on the pill to double up contraception when on antibiotics

It states in the leaflet up to 1 in 10

Yes it is, unfortunately. Try taking a probiotic after the treatment is finished, that did help me.

Thanks I’ll try a probiotic. Did it take long for it to resolve for you?

Amoxicillin did this to me too. Luckily I was holidaying in a place with tons of toilets 😂. Try taking some kefir/probiotic yoghurt to help and drink plenty of water. Eat little and often to not overwhelm your stomach with too much food. Keep it bland.

Mylifeisamesssuchamess · 11/12/2024 14:32

It lasted a few days for me and then I was bunged up for a day or two afterwards. Sods law.

Octavia64 · 11/12/2024 14:35

Yes very common.

LBFseBrom · 11/12/2024 15:03

Yes it is a common side effect. It will pass.

NewMomma21 · 11/12/2024 16:27

I’ve gotten a probiotic so I’ll take that and hope for the best. This is absolutely awful with two small DC to look after
