How can I substitute the pain killing effect of alcohol in a healthy way?

I seem to have quite a sensitive neck/upper back/shoulders and sometimes do something (sleep awkwardly maybe) that gives me a severe crick in the neck. This is painful enough in itself but an after effect of the crick is excrutiating stabbing 24 hour headaches that last for a few weeks and I sometimes have to go to a chiropractor to sort them out.

Anyway, nurofen, paracetamol, nurofen gel, heat packs, ice packs do nothing to solve the topical pain. Co-codamol just about gets on top of the deferred headache pain but I can't take it as it makes me nauseous.

Tonight I've had one and a half glasses of Pinot Grigio and the pain has literally disappeared - from all across my shoulders, my neck and, most remarkably, my head!

I wouldn't normally drink during the week and I don't want to start. So what can I take that will have the same effect as the alcohol in a small amount of wine? Please? Any ideas?

Sounds like tension and you just need to relax
