Things I don't understand about modern life

  1. What "speaking to" means. I know it is a stage in the dating process, but have no idea as to its specific implications.

  2. The point of "link in bio" - why can't you just put the bloody link where I can see it without having to hunt for it?

  3. Gender-woo nonsense. When will the madness end?

  4. Why it seems to be socially acceptable to use your phone to play videos or make calls without headphones, especially on on the bus. STFU!

  5. Talking of buses, why they can so rarely take you from point A to point B without terminating prematurely, stopping to "regulate the service" or stopping to change driver. I'm sure it never used to be this bad.

Why it costs so much to hire films on Amazon when companies like Blockbuster had to have staff, locations, and physical films and charged less??? Why isn't streaming films cheaper as there are so many fewer physical costs?

Is it cheaper if you take into account inflation?

Why do drivers suddenly stop on a busy main road to let drivers out from a side road. It’s a main road for a reason … you have priority and should follow it .. mindless stopping just backs up traffic needlessly.

Not necessarily... speaking from bitter experience, I could be waiting 5 minutes or more if no one ever let me out! I'm quick off the mark though

It's the same principle turning right off a main road; it takes seconds for oncoming traffic ( especially if moving slowly) to let one make the manoeuvre.

Cafecontribution · 10/12/2024 19:52

Double yellow lines seemingly not having any meaning & zebra crossings being optional !

The key is "slow moving" where there's no problem at all.

The real problem is when traffic is flowing freely at normal speeds and some absolute muppet suddenly slams on to let someone in/across which not only risks a rear end bump but also causes a ripple back effect as all other following traffic also has to slow/stop. Maybe not too bad at 20 mph but when some dickhead does it at 40mph or more they can cause mayhem and delay loads of people.

And parking on pavements which is now an epidemic, especially the morons who completely block the pavement. Not quite as bad if at least a three feet gap is left for pedestrians, wheelchairs, prams, etc., but still dangerous hazard for those with impaired vision.

Add to the list:

Parents carrying Reception children in and out of school.

I had odd looks because I was still carrying dc2 in a sling.
He was utterly exhausted from a medical condition.

But yes people judged

I had to google 'shop the edit' when I seen it on a fashion website as I Had no idea what it meant. Basically means 'buy this stuff we are promoting'

I remember, in the old days, you couldn't keep a coat on a young person unless you stapled it on. They'd walk around in a hoodie, shivering and saying they were fine. Nowadays they wear coats like miniature duvets even on blazing hot days.

This seems to have bypassed my child who is a shorts and tshirt in winter kind of kid 🤦‍♀️

Yes, what's wrong with a tip?

And when did "yum, yum" become "nom nom"?

'Tip' and 'hack' are subtly different.

A tip is insider knowledge which helps you do something better.

A hack is a shortcut - usually not quite as good, but quicker/easier.

Yes this! I saw that the suspect gunman of Brian Thompson in New York, shouted something about "lived experience" in a court house scuffle today; which doesn't add to it’s cache.

I thought that "colourway" was originally meaning a combination of colours, eg blue and red striped top, blue and green, red and green etc. But, indeed, now does seem to be for single coloured items. Either way, it's all bullshit, innit?

Why young people dress head to toe in black

i was a goth back in the day. Every now and then i buy an item of clothing that isn't black in a vain attempt to get some colour into my life. But i always go back to black, head to toe, and those things go to the charity shop.

I know many people like this.

No, I mean "speaking to" someone as a precursor (I think) to dating. But I don't know what it implies precisely.

Haven’t read the full thread and someone else may have answered this, but just in case if not… if you say you’re “speaking to” someone, it usually means you’re texting/messaging them but not meeting up with them yet. Many people would rather hang out/date in person ASAP to see if there is a spark in real life, and not waste time etc, but some would rather “speak to” people first, sometimes for a while. From experience (my own, friends etc) usually when “speaking to” someone it’s because you’re not hugely invested, a bit cautious or unsure. Or you may be “speaking to” a few people at the same time.

MissRoseDurward · 10/12/2024 21:00

'Trouser' is bad enough. 'Pant' is worse.

Why has ‘ly’ been dropped from loads of adverbs?

And 'ed' from past tense. 'I text him.' 'I thought it was very bias.' My nephew knew when he was two that you add -ed to a word to make a past tense - 'we buyed'.

And parking on pavements which is now an epidemic, especially the morons who completely block the pavement.

And cause damage. Cracked and broken paving slabs all the way along the road, sometimes just across the road from an actual car park.

This is possibly my pet hate. My neighbour is in a wheelchair and sometimes can't leave the house as he can't get his wheelchair along the pavement. He's asked on the street WhatsApp for people to stop. And they haven't. We have parking bays marked out, and I assume they are wide enough to park in and leave room for traffic. The council don't do anything about it either.

The slow moving traffic means there is never a space until some kind soul lets you out. Most people leave a gap that's enough braking distance but not enough to pull out. Ilove the people that either speed up or let you out.

greengreyblue · 11/12/2024 06:35

Electric scooters that get dumped in stupid places like in front of your house in the middle of the path. Prams and wheelchairs then can’t use the path.
