Things I don't understand about modern life

  1. What "speaking to" means. I know it is a stage in the dating process, but have no idea as to its specific implications.

  2. The point of "link in bio" - why can't you just put the bloody link where I can see it without having to hunt for it?

  3. Gender-woo nonsense. When will the madness end?

  4. Why it seems to be socially acceptable to use your phone to play videos or make calls without headphones, especially on on the bus. STFU!

  5. Talking of buses, why they can so rarely take you from point A to point B without terminating prematurely, stopping to "regulate the service" or stopping to change driver. I'm sure it never used to be this bad.

No, it’s really not.

It’s not anything to do with being a modern day thing people do. They’re tiny kids who have probably been overstimulated all day and want to be close to their parents. It’s more shocking not to tbh

Agree with this

If I've had a shit day, I want a cuddle from DH

Is my child not allowed to want some comfort if they've had a rubbish day or are feeling pooey.

I will do whatever my child needs from me and you can go and judge something more worthy 😂

Why young people dress head to toe in black

"I wear black on the outside,
because black is how I feel on the inside"
Thinking that the affectation of being unhappy makes oneself more interesting/profound has been a thing for ages. (I was that Goth). The modern twist is having a "mental illness".

Re buses, I am assuming you are in London?

Control regulates when buses terminate, there are targets they have to hit on service frequency and time keeping.

Or drivers at the max of their hours, you can only drive for 5 1/2 hours before a mandatory break.

Changing drivers mid route is due to remote clock ons, company policy to cut costs.

Collaborations are now Someone X someone else instead of with, and or featuring. What does it mean???

Re. terminating buses - but what's the point of the bus meeting a target while the passengers stand at the side of the road not getting any closer to their destination?

This is definitely a relatively new phenomenon.

Is that modern?

I was making a comment on a previous poster’s response

Why, given we live in a digital age, do solicitors fuck around with house and land sales so a simple sale for which paperwork should take an afternoon takes six months?

I'd really like to know that 😡. Radio 4 had a program and said average conveyancing time for a house sale took 4-6 weeks 25 years ago. Today it takes 4-6 months.

The Hack thing gets me. Whenever I've seen any they're not even tips they're just the way I've always done whatever it is.
Maybe I'm a hack genius,

MorrisZapp · 10/12/2024 17:40

I picked up my child any time he wanted it until he was physically too big.

I miss it and I only wish I'd done it more. Crikey they're small for such a short time, tough love can come once they start shaving.

niadainud · 09/12/2024 18:17

Yes, what's wrong with a tip?

And when did "yum, yum" become "nom nom"?

Nom nom is the worst, my friend uses it all the time

"Shop the look" Confused

"Accentuate with a red lip and a hint of blush"

I've even seen, "a slim trouser" Grin

”I’m going for a smokey eye

”I’m pairing these pieces

It's the targets TFL set for the bus companies, this article explains it.

Doesn't seem the best idea to me.

Bus driver explains reason why some buses randomly stop mid-route

The bus driver also revealed their favourite route, the route with the 'most crack heads' and if they can hear when people say 'thank you'

@OriginalUsername2 or are you “teaming” a top with a trouser perhaps?

Hivishero26 · 10/12/2024 18:24

Why do drivers suddenly stop on a busy main road to let drivers out from a side road. It’s a main road for a reason … you have priority and should follow it .. mindless stopping just backs up traffic needlessly.

Maybe they're South African? They do that all the time over there. Or they did, anyway.

And following on from that, why does the last car in a queue of slow moving traffic let you out or across in front of them when they could just carry on and you'd just come out after them literally a second or two later. It's as if they want some kind of muttley medal for doing a good turn (even though completely pointless!).

  1. speaking to - because in the olden times you’d meet someone in person first, then exchange details and call / email and arrange to meet up again. Now you don’t physically meet first, you connect online and so talk /flirt via your phone until you decide if you want a date with them and make it real. But that speaking /talking stage is a new dating stage, that is real.

In olden times. FML

Why people are so quick to call each other cunts

Sorry this made me laugh out loud (I think because I wasn’t expecting to stumble across a casual c bomb 😂) and I will now assume I am part of the problem. 🙈

I always assumed it meant ‘loves’ I have no idea why. Years ago Mac did a Barbie x Mac and I always called it Barbie loves Mac. I’m not sure if I made it up in hindsight. It just looks like it says that in my mind 😊♥️

noobiedoobie · 10/12/2024 19:30

I wonder sometimes if everyone who Does it enjoys making reels on Instagram or tiktok.

I also don't understand some news articles on BBC News, they just don't seem that newsworthy.

I'm also a bit disappointed in the quality of mainstream TV. Also prevailing slavishness to beauty standards.

user1471465132 · 10/12/2024 19:42

Why has ‘ly’ been dropped from loads of adverbs? It sounds so ugly to say ‘you did amazing’ compared to ‘you did amazingly’. Incredible/incredibly etc

Why it costs so much to hire films on Amazon when companies like Blockbuster had to have staff, locations, and physical films and charged less??? Why isn't streaming films cheaper as there are so many fewer physical costs?

This. And phones, ...so expensive compared to early incarnations.

Why is everything also tied into contracts . Broadband, phones, dentists, contact lenses, supermarket deliveries etc etc. I miss the days of just dipping in and out.

Also before, you could get a range of things. Every town had a rough pub, a boring pub, niche drinking place , a wine bar and somewhere you could take someone for a special meal. Now it's either Spoons (burger and fries) or gastro pub (boar burger and triple cooked chips). It's all aimed at everyone, separated by price.

This is a bizarre reading of the situation. ‘It’s better than them not going?’ If a child is refusing to go to school because you aren’t carrying them in, you’ve got different problems. As I said, this is a parent thing and not a child thing. Parents are picking their children up physically and carrying them out of the playground. I love children, I loved teaching them, I haven’t been a harsh parent, but I would really question the way some parents seem to be actively holding their children back from achieving those little gradual steps of independence as they get older. Children like to be develop their independence and it’s what they’re programmed to do. It doesn’t mean parents withholding affection or comfort.

I don't think because a parent sometimes carries their kid to or from school that necessarily means they never walk.

I think I didnt phrase that well.
I meant that if a child finds that comforting when they start school I don't see it as a big issue. I saw a mum I know occasionally carry her child back after school. However other times he scoots all the way. Of course if someone's child never has the opportunity to walk that would be concerning.

Wait.. picking up a child!
According to some here you're probably your child's servant by now. Maybe as a teenager they have a chariot.
