Mattress topper

I have an Emma mattress but my back and hips ache in the morning. I thought it would offer good support but it's like lying on a slab of concrete!

I need a really good topper to add a layer of comfort – any recommendations? I've already tried a Panda topper (memory foam is too squishy for me, and actually gave me more back pain) and a Silent Night 5cm topper, which is OK but still too thin. I'm thinking of investing in the White Company goose down topper (9cm). It's pricey but I'm prepared to pay if I can get a good night's sleep! Has anyone got one?

Would a new mattress not be better? Can you still return the Emma?

FalconSkies · 09/12/2024 14:21

No, I paid a lot for the Emma and I persevered with it because it's supposed to be one of the best. It's too late to return now.

Having done more research, I think I need a softer layer for my painful hip. I'm a side sleeper. It's probably a great supportive base but just a bit too hard for me.

What topper did you buy in the end, op?
I bought a panda in December 2024, took it off the bed in spring as it was getting too hot(not as cool as they advertise it to be). Then my cat proceeded to wee on it so my partner washed it and we left it in the scorching heat to dry off in the garden for a couple of days.
I wanted to put it back on the bed today and realised it probably had a damp spot or the little shit peed on it again(no smell though). It ended up in the bath tub again but I know it won’t dry in this weather(pointless exercise to wash IMO).
I am looking for a new one myself. Don’t want to buy a panda again, it also kept sliding down, unlike its 2 cheaper predecessors from Lidl( those were sinking in after a while but at least were staying put).

I had to buy one due to joint and bone pain and it’s wonderful. From the mattress topper company -Seriously Comfortable Revive Plus model

How do mattress toppers work with fitted sheets? I want to get one as my matress feels very hard so am interested in this aspect if anyone can help?

GentleSheep · 16/09/2025 22:06

Sounds very much like the same problem I had or rather have, but I have solved. I bought a new mattress with more springs thinking it would be better for my back but alas, it's like sleeping on concrete and caused pain. So, because I couldn't return it, I decided to get a topper. I bought a Silent Night 10 cm one, but it wasn't enough. So now I sleep on not only that but also 2 single duvets folded in half on top of each other. That does the trick. Yes it's ridiculous but it's really the only solution that I can come up with!

Fitted sheet goes on top of the topper.

Edited

So one deep fitted sheet over both the topper and mattress?

We have elastic with clips on the end to go on the corners and keep the sheet in place for ones that aren’t deep enough for the mattress and topper
Think they’re probably from Amazon cheap

Ive been researching ... we've just bought a topper [dorma] for spare bed. Weve put a matress protector on the matress, then a topper, then a matress protector, then a fitted sheet.
Slept at my friend's... matress, topper, sheet.
Entirely your choice ... lady serving said just put sheet on top of topper.

FalconSkies · 16/09/2025 23:18

I finally found my solution - an Emma mattress plus a Soak & Sleep goosedown topper - blissful comfort at last! A firm base, which I really need, with a lovely, fluffy layer.

We've got 16 inch deep fitted sheets from amazon. An absolute doddle to put on, no wrestling with them, and they stay put. Got a 12 inch thick mattress and a 2 inch topper. Game changer
