Will I enjoy Wicked?

I’m possibly in the minority and I have not been to the cinema to see Wicked.

I’m really not a musical fan. West End shows tend to make me cringe more than anything.

I went to see Cats and Starlight Express as a teenager with my dance group and didn’t enjoy either. As an adult I went to see Wicked in the theatre in London with friends and left half way through, I just couldn’t sit through it and was bored.

I came to the conclusion that whilst I think the actors in these shows are immensely talented, it’s just not for me.

I don’t like musicals. Hated movies like The Greatest Showman, Wizard of Oz, Chicago and Moulin Rouge etc

My sister however insists I will just LOVE the new Wicked movie, how could I not? It’s wonderful.

Now she loves musicals, and is always off to watch things like that one about Henry the 8th wives or Harry Potter the musical etc. She is desperate for me to see it.

I really don’t want to waste money and time seeing something I don’t feel an interest in. The last thing I watched at the cinema that I enjoyed was Equaliser 2…Denzel was fab.

Anyway, is Wicked really for everyone? Has everyone loved it so much or experienced people who have loved it who normally hate that sort of thing. Am I really missing out?

Light hearted chat of course, this obviously isn’t problem of the century.

If "Defying Gravity" is the best song, then, to be fair, it must be pretty rubbish. I like musicals, but this does nothing for me.

Needmorelego · 08/12/2024 17:24

I don't think it sounds like you will like it to be honest.
Not your thing.

No, I agree. I can appreciate how talented the actors are and everyone else who worked on the movie…I just have no desire to see it.

If you are on the fence about musicals then 3 hours of it that is only half of the story is not going to be a good idea I don’t think

Ludovico · 08/12/2024 17:25

I wanted to go watch it but the interviews they have been doing have given me the ick about it. Both look like a pair of skeletons

smallchange · 08/12/2024 17:26

Of course you won't enjoy it.

Phineyj · 08/12/2024 17:27

I see quite a lot of performances of various kinds.

I thought Wicked (the stage musical) was OK and I liked the feminist theme and the dragon, and "Gravity" is a wonderful can belto number, but as shows go, I could take it or leave it. The theatre is very beautiful though.

Regarding the film (which I haven't seen) I expect it's enjoyable but it's not the easiest plot if you're not familiar with it. Your DSis should probably go with another hard-core fan.

If you walked out of the musical in the theatre, why would you even consider going to see the film?! Confused

NarcoosseeLover · 08/12/2024 17:28

Stick to my guns then!

Well, my sister claims that the film is so much better. She has been to see it, but really wants me to see it too.

To be honest I didn’t realise it was three hours! I’m not sure I have the attention span for that either!

I'm not particularly interested in going to see it, and I love most musicals in the theatre.

I can't see why you would consider going to see it when it clearly isn't the sort of thing you like.

I was wondering if anyone would say
‘ I hate musicals too, but watched the movie and it was a must see. Loved it. Totally worth the £16 a ticket’.

I love musicals but did not enjoy seeing Wicked at the cinema. It was far too long and I have had no desire in the last two weeks since I saw it, to listen to the soundtrack. I haven’t seen Wicked at the theatre though - maybe I’d appreciate it more if I had. I did like the ending though and did shed a tear but it was a bit of a slog to get to that part. I’d give it a miss if I were you.

chipsandpeas · 08/12/2024 17:33

i love musicals both films and theatre and Wicked i didnt enjoy so i wont be going to see it at the cinema

ExquisiteDecorations · 08/12/2024 17:35

I wouldn't bother, if you didn't like the stage show its unlikely you'll enjoy 2.5 hours which is only half of it.

HPandthelastwish · 08/12/2024 17:36

I enjoyed it more than I did the stage show, but if musicals aren't your thing then you probably wont.

Or pay your £15 (actually only £8 here but I expect other places are more expensive) and spend time with your sister and pop to a Spoonies afterwards for a chat. Would she go on her own? Is she looking for someone to go with?

AITAH10 · 08/12/2024 17:37

I don't musicals as long as it's not just music in lieu of story if that makes any sense. I went the other day and it just felt song after song and what felt like a painful eternity I sneaked a glance at phone and still over an hour left. I fell asleep for around 20mins

My sister’s seen it. She went with her adult daughter. She just thinks I should see it too 😂

Not only is it the best song, it’s one of only three songs that are at all memorable. I do like (some) musicals, and I thought it was completely underwhelming.

levantine · 08/12/2024 17:39

I like musicals, but Wicked in the theatre was one of the worst things I've seen. I only went because we had free tickets, but even free it wasn't worth it

AHFBridport · 08/12/2024 17:39

I was bored stiff by Wicked at the theatre so won't be watching the film - and I love a musical, never get bored watching Sound of Music, which is longer.

Ah, so definitely not a movie for all, so tremendous that it surpasses usual personal preference.

Don't like the songs, hate Defying Gravity, load of caterwauling.

NarcoosseeLover · 08/12/2024 17:42

Oh I did just realise that I like the movie Calamity Jane.
