Will I enjoy Wicked?

I’m possibly in the minority and I have not been to the cinema to see Wicked.

I’m really not a musical fan. West End shows tend to make me cringe more than anything.

I went to see Cats and Starlight Express as a teenager with my dance group and didn’t enjoy either. As an adult I went to see Wicked in the theatre in London with friends and left half way through, I just couldn’t sit through it and was bored.

I came to the conclusion that whilst I think the actors in these shows are immensely talented, it’s just not for me.

I don’t like musicals. Hated movies like The Greatest Showman, Wizard of Oz, Chicago and Moulin Rouge etc

My sister however insists I will just LOVE the new Wicked movie, how could I not? It’s wonderful.

Now she loves musicals, and is always off to watch things like that one about Henry the 8th wives or Harry Potter the musical etc. She is desperate for me to see it.

I really don’t want to waste money and time seeing something I don’t feel an interest in. The last thing I watched at the cinema that I enjoyed was Equaliser 2…Denzel was fab.

Anyway, is Wicked really for everyone? Has everyone loved it so much or experienced people who have loved it who normally hate that sort of thing. Am I really missing out?

Light hearted chat of course, this obviously isn’t problem of the century.

I've seen it.
Can't say whether I enjoyed it that much or not. I'm ok with musicals.
Loved Joker 2 which people are hating because it's a musical.
This sounds weird.
I'm glad I've seen it and will watch the second one. But if somebody said to me go and watch it again I couldn't invest. It wasn't that good. I felt it's aimed at millennials.
At one point I wondered how long left there was and thought if I look and there's ages I might scream. So I don't think it's for you OP.
But my son (age 33) took his dd8 and they loved it.

HaddyAbrams · 08/12/2024 19:11

I loved it. But I'm a massive musical fan and loved the stage show when i saw it too.
My friend went despite hating musicals and loved it so much she wants to go again! But she loves The WoO.

If you hated the stage show I'd say don't bother.

I didn't like the shock betrayal and I've always been scared of the wizard of Oz. But I loved Elphaba flying at the end.

I like musicals in general, but I didn't enjoy Wicked. They made a real song and dance of the song and dance sequences and the songs aren't that catchy or meaningful, I think it could have easily been 45 minutes shorter. The storyline was interesting as an allegory but that was it.

From what you have said I don't think you would enjoy it.

Verite1 · 08/12/2024 19:16

I’m not a huge musical fan, but I don’t hate them. Somewhere in the middle. I enjoyed the film overall but it did drag in the middle. Beginning and ending were good. If you really don’t like any musicals, you won’t like this.

The audiences going to see it sound really annoying, loads of whooping and crying and whatnot. So even if I did want to see Wicked I'd go on a Tuesday morning near the end of its run.

There was no whooping in my showing… not even any clapping, which tbh, Ariana and Cynthia throughly deserved.

Behindthethymes · 08/12/2024 19:22

Definitely not. It’s sooo long- 3 hours and still only half way through the plot of the musical. I dozed off for a bit.

You might enjoy the book though which is nothing at all like the musical and a deep, engaging read. I only went to the film in the hope that it might bring some of the depth of the book, and to be fair it did dwell a tiny bit more on the Animal suppression theme. I am still baffled that anyone could read a book that powerful and then conjure up a musical that trite.

I wanted to go watch it but the interviews they have been doing have given me the ick about it. Both look like a pair of skeletons

I’m not sure commenting on their bodies is relevant as to whether OP would enjoy the film. I think they both look fantastic and would love to have their figures.

If "Defying Gravity" is the best song, then, to be fair, it must be pretty rubbish. I like musicals, but this does nothing for me.

I caught DG on the radio and couldn't believe that was the song people were raving about. Maybe it makes sense in context.

Phineyj · 08/12/2024 20:35

I like it because it's in my register. And wire work is always fun to watch.

I must say I did misheard "wicked" (which they sang as "week-ed") and wonder where they were going for the weekend 😂.

Phineyj · 08/12/2024 20:37

The animal suppression theme didn't work at all in my opinion. They try to do too much in the stage show (hence I imagine why the film is very long).

HRTQueen · 08/12/2024 20:42

I had the unfortunate experience of having to sit through the musical it is 2hrs 45min long felt much much longer

I am quite sure if you are not a musical fan you will not enjoy the film. My friend who absolutely loved the musical also thought the film was brilliant

I was wondering if anyone would say
‘ I hate musicals too, but watched the movie and it was a must see. Loved it. Totally worth the £16 a ticket’.

A lot of people have said this in the last couple of weeks, including people who didn't like the stage musical. I'm 50/50 on whether you'd like it because almost everyone who has commented after seeing it (easily 90%+) has been very positive, and that includes many non musical fans like my husband. But if you truly hate the genre, it is ultimately still a musical. They spend a lot of time singing and dancing and while they do both of those things extremely well, and the choreography is also exceptionally done, yeah, it's still a musical.

I was very sceptical and absolutely loved it, but I do like musicals in general.

It does, it's absolutely epic in the context of the story and the film brought to life perfectly a song that has had a ton of meaning for a lot of people for a long time. But I do think the context is what elevates it (no pun intended), I wouldn't love it as a song in isolation as it isn't my usual cup of tea.

OrangesCinammonIvy · 08/12/2024 20:49

I do like musicals.

I've seen wicked at the theatre and found it enjoyable but I couldn't really remember the plot or songs.

We watched it today and really enjoyed it, moved at pace obviously they can do more creative stuff in the film than stage.

If your this agaisnt it I wouldn't bother however.

FunkyMonks · 08/12/2024 20:49

I loved it the whole soundtrack was also amazing I'm not a massive fan of musicals but I really enjoyed the movie, maybe because I could relate to the underlying morals and loved Elphaba.

I am now looking to go to and see it in theatre next year, and I'm looking forward to the second part sometime next year.

I will be the first to admit I hate pointless random
Singing that can happen in musiclas but found it enjoyable.

Ajsjdjdk · 08/12/2024 20:50

I'm not sure you will like it. I loved The greatest Showman, enjoyed Chicago and I'm fond of the Wizard of Oz. Wicked, however, I thought was pretty poor. Lack of storyline, the animal thing was good but I don't feel like they delved into it enough. Nothing really happened for the first 90 minutes. There were too many songs, yes I know it's a musical so expected singing, but this felt like they were singing for the sake of it. There was no purpose.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were really good though!

Tabbyandwhite · 08/12/2024 23:32

The film is awful. Don't really feel it has anything to do with the original works and can only think they've hijacked the original to cash in on a movie. L Frank Baum would not approve, IMO.
