Will I enjoy Wicked?

I’m possibly in the minority and I have not been to the cinema to see Wicked.

I’m really not a musical fan. West End shows tend to make me cringe more than anything.

I went to see Cats and Starlight Express as a teenager with my dance group and didn’t enjoy either. As an adult I went to see Wicked in the theatre in London with friends and left half way through, I just couldn’t sit through it and was bored.

I came to the conclusion that whilst I think the actors in these shows are immensely talented, it’s just not for me.

I don’t like musicals. Hated movies like The Greatest Showman, Wizard of Oz, Chicago and Moulin Rouge etc

My sister however insists I will just LOVE the new Wicked movie, how could I not? It’s wonderful.

Now she loves musicals, and is always off to watch things like that one about Henry the 8th wives or Harry Potter the musical etc. She is desperate for me to see it.

I really don’t want to waste money and time seeing something I don’t feel an interest in. The last thing I watched at the cinema that I enjoyed was Equaliser 2…Denzel was fab.

Anyway, is Wicked really for everyone? Has everyone loved it so much or experienced people who have loved it who normally hate that sort of thing. Am I really missing out?

Light hearted chat of course, this obviously isn’t problem of the century.

Don't go. You definitely won't enjoy it. It's funny and sort of sends itself up, but it's really long and very full on visually. I know nothing of musicals really, but because DD wanted to go and literally squealed with delight at every turn, I liked it to.
But as an adult on my own? Not really.

Tara336 · 08/12/2024 17:42

I sae Wicked at the Theatre as friend had bought tickets for us to see it on birthday. I really didn't enjoy it and was glad when we could leave so I won't be going out of way to watch the film. I do think sometimes that there's so much hype people don't like to admit they didn't enjoy the show/film

Havalona · 08/12/2024 17:43

I'd be bored rigid also. Musicals are not everyone's cup of tea. And in my case I can't think of anything worse than sitting in a cinema or theatre for hours either. Just me I suppose but I feel so hemmed in and it's awkward to escape unless I can get an aisle seat! Also I have lost a good bit of hearing due to illness, so the sound is never great for me either. I'm not complaining or moaning, that's what it is for me.

So I don't and won't go. I can think of plenty of different activities that I enjoy, but cinema/theatre is not one of them.

I thoroughly enjoyed Wicked but I'm a musical fan. Despite seeing overwhelmingly positive reviews and the cinema being the busiest I've seen it for ages, I noticed quite a few people left before the end and a number of children/ teens became increasingly restless and were coming in and out a lot. I don't think it's everyone's cup of tea at all! I'd happily go again but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone who doesn't know it already or isn't generally a fan of musicals.

Decapitatedsausage · 08/12/2024 17:54

I bloody love a musical, and was really excited by this coming to the cinema, but I was decidedly underwhelmed by it. Six on the other hand (the one your sister likes about Henry 8ths wives) is amazing!

ButterflyBitch · 08/12/2024 17:57

I really enjoyed the film. I do enjoy a musical though. Don’t go if you walked out of the stage version. It’s just a waste of your money and time.

Moro93 · 08/12/2024 18:02

Don’t go and see it, it’s not your thing clearly.

I love musicals and really enjoyed the movie, nowhere near as good as the stage show though. If you were bored during the stage show then you definitely won’t like the film.

My DH usually enjoys a musical but he hated the Wicked movie, said it felt like he was watching it for weeks and was bored.

NarcoosseeLover · 08/12/2024 18:03

Thank you all. I’ll give it a miss for now.

I thought it was wonderful and could have sat and watched the whole thing again. Doesn’t sound right for you though.

Screamingabdabz · 08/12/2024 18:06

My DD and her gay male BF were dying to see it and they said that although the production/CGI was amazing, they found it utterly boring and devoid of magic. They were really disappointed.

sandybeaches74 · 08/12/2024 18:08

No, I feel the same with most musicals. I took my daughter to see the film and it was so boring I fell asleep. The only musical I have ever really genuinely enjoyed on the stage was the Lion King

strubidooo · 08/12/2024 18:09

I have the attention span of an ant and can fall asleep anywhere. The first two hours I was nodding off but the last 45 mins was really good. I would wait for it to come on Netflix.

BigcatLittlecat · 08/12/2024 18:09

I love musicals, but it is up there with one of the worst films I have ever seen! The only good thing was it was warm and I fell asleep!

Hoolihan · 08/12/2024 18:12

I love love LOVED it and was bursting with joy by the end. But if you don't like musicals and didn't like the stage show you're very obviously not going to enjoy it.

Oh dear, definitely not a film that everyone loves. It’s settled then. I’m definitely not bothering.

This thread is however making me feel like watching a movie. I might go and pop Castaway on!

I adored it but I like musicals and it doesn’t sound like you do, so you’d probably hate it!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 08/12/2024 18:24

Why do you think you would, or should?

Whoarethoseguys · 08/12/2024 18:26

I loved it I thought the performances were great.
But if you don't like musicals, dislike the Wizard of Oz and you didn't enjoy the theatre production of I don't see how you will enjoy the film

SybilTheSpy · 08/12/2024 18:26

The audiences going to see it sound really annoying, loads of whooping and crying and whatnot. So even if I did want to see Wicked I'd go on a Tuesday morning near the end of its run.

recipientofraspberries · 08/12/2024 18:28

Nah. I'm only adding to what's already been said and I see you've made your decision, but it really isn't particularly special. I think it's managed to do a convincing press tour that makes it look like it's going to be really moving, entertaining and unique but it's not. I went yesterday and found it thoroughly ordinary. I also don't really like musicals, relate to everything you've said about them.

anxioussister · 08/12/2024 18:29

I found the live musical absolutely excruciating. I have no reason to believe the movie version will be different.

to each their own. I shall not be going.

farmergirl15 · 08/12/2024 18:45

From what you've said I don't think you ll enjoy it. I loved the musical personally, I don't think I ll watch the film until the second one comes out tho, I hate it when the stories cut off (LOTR drove me bonkers lol)
If you don't want to see it then please don't feel pressured into watching it, that's time you ll never get back.

kaela100 · 08/12/2024 19:02

I dislike it because Fiyero is a convenient heterosexual romance and when he turns into Scarecrow it's pointless. I wanted them to remove Fiyero in the movies and make it all about elphaba/glinda

Luddite26 · 08/12/2024 19:04

KayVess · 08/12/2024 17:25

If you are on the fence about musicals then 3 hours of it that is only half of the story is not going to be a good idea I don’t think

Agree with this.

AllIsMerryAndBright · 08/12/2024 19:06

Oh noooo! I totally love the hype. And have really been looking forward to seeing this! Have persuaded DS into seeing it with me and my friend & her daughter.
But I'm not to be honest a massive musical fan. I just totally get swept away by the hype 🙈🤣
