If you have a dashcam ...

... did you fit it yourself? I want to get my DH one for Xmas, and hardwired would be best. He can follow instructions ok, but if its complicated then I'll have to get the fitting service (not sure how to gift wrap that, but will work something out, e.g. get it done xmas eve, hope he doesn't notice, then gift wrap the empty box 😁)

Assume the camera is still removable even if it’s hard wired?
What about a rear window camera while you’re at it.

I bought a nexcam from Halfords and paid for them to fit it, it’s hard wired in so not sure how easy they are. Depends which one you bought but does he want a dash cam for Christmas

If he is very practicaly minded and is happy to think about possibly buying some more tools to remove things like A pillar trim to get wiring down to the fuse box then go for it. Can he read and make sense of a fuse box to make sure he connect sit to a fuse that turns off when igntion is ff etc? However, how old is the car? Some plastic trim clips dont age well and snap off, this is where a vehicle electrician wins out, they may well be carrying spares etc. If you go for a rear view cam then routing cables round te side of the head lining may need trim removal tools, you can but a kit from Hafords or Ebay etc.

Why not ask him? If I buy this, are you OK with fitiing it? This might be the better approach?

Oh you have to put it basically under the roof. Just buy a NexBase from Halfords (rear and front) and pay them to fit it. Done.

I got a front cam and rear cam with parking camera option fitted by halford.

You buy it online, plus fixing kit if needed for your car model and then book and pay for fitting. You can also buy it in branch and book.

I checked beforehand and had to notify my insurance as it counted as a modification. No additional cost on policy. Just got an updated certificate with the modification declared and recorded.

I wonder if you have to send them the footage of any accident, even if you're at fault? (Not that we ever would be of course 🙃)

How much does it cost for buying and fitting?

TimeForATerf · 09/12/2024 06:35

go into Halfords, tell them You want it for a Christmas present, pay for the kit and fitting, take the kit home and wrap it and book the fitting in for after Christmas. I recommend their fitting, it’s very professional. I’ve had it done to 3 cars in our family including my own, front and rear dash cams.
