The emperors new clothes

Or what you would consider to be so. (Obvs lighthearted)

Everytime I make a pasta sauce my husband always suggests adding pasta water to it, I’ve done this so many times and can’t see it makes any difference at all.

Also, Bobbi Brown miracle balm. Makes no difference and just makes me face feel clogged up.

anyone else?

Can’t think of any but here for the revelations

Newsenmum · 08/12/2024 13:41

Oh I know. Those stupid stick on sleep patches for kids. They do absolutely nothing.

Onlyonekenobe · 08/12/2024 13:42

Not the point of the post but adding pasta water to your sauce is only of benefit if you’re going to also add your al dente pasta to the sauce. The starch in the water helps bind the sauce to the pasta, make for a creamier finish.

As for the point of your post: almost all of modern life I’m afraid.

acne patches, they do nothing.

Agree with @Onlyonekenobe on the pasta.

I think ‘emperor’s new clothes’ situations are largely subjective.

A friend and I just watched an early Joanna Hogg film (Tom Hiddleston’s first film role). What I thought was brilliantly subtle and intelligent, she thought was cold, odd and uninvolving. (Improvised dialogue, only available light, unmoving camera, very long shots.) She doesn’t get the critical praise heaped on Joanna Hogg at all, so she would say her films were classic examples of the emperor’s new clothes. Whereas I don’t think so, because I watched them first and only discovered after I’d adored the first two that they were so critically lauded and had won prizes — I wasn’t basing my view on someone else’s opinion. I genuinely like them. Our tastes just differ.

I think for something to meet the definition of an ‘emperor’s new clothes’ situation, it has to be something you are unimpressed by, but go along with what you perceive to be a majority admiration because you trust other people’s opinion rather than your own.

Thank you - I never knew that!

Yes, those patches are useless and ditto Lion's Mane. I would have loved for both of these things to work but neither did.

Appreciate these do nothing but can you share anyway? DS 8 has suddenly started finding it really hard to fall asleep and totally got into his head about it, so is keeping himself awake. I'll take a possible placebo to try even if they don't really work 🤣

fivebyfivebuffy · 12/12/2024 11:46

@DanceTheDevilBackIntoHisHole depending how susceptible he is you could use a pillow mist "sleepy spray"

averythinline · 12/12/2024 13:29

2nd pillow spray.. I also found a kids meditation cd for DS when he had a phase of that...
We talked about sleep hygiene... And it helped him understand it can happen to anyone and reduced stress about it...
