When did this become a thing? 😀

Today I've read a thread about a baby made of velcro and caring for a koala baby.
Took me a little while to realise they were about clingy babies...!

I don't know OP . It's new terminology for me at least!

I read a thread yesterday talking about a koala baby and it took me a moment or two to understand what the OP meant and that she was describing her own baby.

Hadn't heard of a baby made of velcro though.

I think I prefer the koala simile to the velcro one.

The term velcro baby was around when I had DD 15 years ago, it's not new.

Oh I must be more out the loop than I realised @Maboscelar !

I have a velcro cat.

Yes, it was used when I had mine twenty five years ago.

I read the koala baby one and thought it was about an actual koala for the briefest of moments also. It's a good description. I've heard velcro baby since I was a child tho and I'm 39.

I have a velcro cat.

Same here. Apart from going out grocery shopping first thing and a couple of toilet trips, I barely moved from about 10 am to 6 pm yesterday as us and the cats were indoors hiding from the storm.

When I wanted to get up to make dinner it was a hell of a battle getting the cat who'd been on my lap all day to move so I could stand up.

Yes, I definitely remember coming across it in parenting books and probably on here when I had DS, now 12.

Maboscelar · 08/12/2024 10:50

I've looked it up and it was invented by Dr Sears in his book in 1993, so it's over 30 years old as a term.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 08/12/2024 14:51

I think it’s a weird term, babies are designed to want to be close to their mothers, it’s not a design fault, it’s the default surely.

LimeYellow · 08/12/2024 14:52

I agree with pp, velcro baby has been around for ages but I hadn't heard of koala baby before.
