Been waiting 3 years for an operation

I have 5 dc with an assortment of medical issues. So I find it helpful when they have an appointment to take a photo of the dc in the waiting room so when I am asked when dc last had a hearing test or saw ENT then I can just check my photos.

Anyway, my photo memory thing helpfully informed me that it's now 3 years since I took my then 8 year old to see the plastic surgeon who put him on the waiting list for an operation. In the photo he looked so little, and he was in his primary school uniform which of course makes him look so much younger and is a reminder of how long this has been going on. We have had 2 dates where we were told the operation was happening and then it got cancelled both times. We have had an online meeting with other children who have had the operation. Ds is now reluctant to do things that involve planning in advance in case we get a date for the operation. He wanted to pull out of the school play this week because he is worried he will let the rest of the cast down if he has to pull out nearer the time. Normally I wouldn't tell a child of his age he needed to have an operation at this stage but because we've been given a date twice, in November 2022 and March this year, he knows all about it.

I'm just so fed up about it, it's now been 25% of his life he has been on this waiting list.

Ring the consultant. It’s unfair to keep children waiting so long.

Thank you. The consultant is off sick at the moment, for the second time since ds has been on the waiting list (not that it's his fault, I'm sure he'd rather be operating than be ill). I have been ringing his secretary every 3 months or so but she just says she has no idea when ds will get his operation. I am planning on ringing her again to remind her that he has now been waiting 3 years. The waiting list was 1 year long when he first went on it.

Just had an update from the Secretary who said that the consultant is back from sick leave on phased return so although she still doesn't know when ds will be seen, the waiting list should start to move quicker now.
