@Pheasantfood thank you. I’m new to it myself. Only ever follow my family’s flights. Hope none of their planes ever go red now I know what it means! Do you know what the emergency is for this one? How do the twitter folks know?!

Not sure how the twitter folk know, whether it’s from the comms or estimation !
Flight Radar 24 really is addictive isn’t it !!

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 07/12/2024 18:06

I love watching YouTube with the ATC voice overs.

For info at many airlines it’s two attempts and then (unless there’s an obvious improvement in conditions) divert.

Of course you might end up more limited by the fuel you have.

I think the one that diverted to Frankfurt had 3 goes. The passengers must have been super anxious 😬

Frankfurt! Crikey. I wonder what the most attempts it’s ever taken anyone to land? There were so proper hairy attempts on big jet TV today!

They can only normally attempt twice before diverting to an alternate. I have occasionally seen 3 attempts before but it's rare. Of course it's not to say they'll land straight away at the alternate though, that could technically be another 2 attempts!

I’d guess the twitter folks might know some info if they are listening to ATC/airaft VHF comms, which is OK in most of Europe but not really OK in UK, especially if they then relay what they have heard.

These days with inflight Wi-Fi some people tweet from live onboard, though they almost certainly won’t have the full story.

The BA flight was met on stand by technical vehicles.

The BA flight was met on stand by technical vehicles.

?? Not really sure what the significance of that is TBH.

You’d expect some “technical” vehicles around the stand even on a normal arrival, e.g. a bowser for refuelling, especially if the plan is a quick refuel and go, vehicles such as used by engineers…are those reporting this seeing something else?

FuckMeUpFlorida · 07/12/2024 18:40

My DSS is a pilot and had one of his landings filmed by Big Jet TV Grin

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 07/12/2024 18:40

@notimagain no significance other than the fact it was squawking an emergency before landing, technical vehicles met it. Could be refuel as you say, who knows?

Workingclasslass · 07/12/2024 18:42

I live on the top of a hill I have country Behind my flat I am very exposed. I have nothing next to me on one side so far my back door has literally been ripped off. The hinges. Had to have somebody make sure they could shut it and will try and fix it properly in a few days when it’s not windy. So God knows how aeroplanes are flying in this because truthfully it’s howling outside I can hardly open my door at the front when I got a parcel delivery because it’s so windy.

Starlightstargazer · 07/12/2024 19:23

Is the squawking only available on the paid version of Flight Radar?

AFAIK anything squawking emergency/emergency, 7700, shows up as a red aircraft on basic FR and you also see the 7700 flagged up at the top of the data panel if you select that aircraft.

If you actually want to read all the various 4 digit squawks almost all traffic is sending out (I’m sure why you would but because the info embedded in those is generally deeply geeky) then you can certainly see it on some free trackers (e.g, ADS-B), it might be a pay for on flight radar, don’t know.

At this point I’ll point out that most 7700s in the UK are pinged out for medical emergencies so there’s almost an literally ambulance chasing element to some of the interest in these squawks..

Starlightstargazer · 07/12/2024 20:16

Thank you!

Riverswims · 07/12/2024 20:23

it was wonderful today! can’t stay off flight radar either🤓

SpikyHatePotato · 07/12/2024 21:53

Just seen the flight that diverted to Frankfurt has just touched down at Heathrow.

AgathaMystery · 08/12/2024 00:10

It’s absolutely bonkers over Stansted tonight

StrikeForever · 08/12/2024 00:20

Wow! My DH loves Big Jet TV to the point that the soundtrack to my house often has me feeling that I’m living in an airport 😳 I honestly thought it was just him and some other male nerds. I see from this thread that I stand corrected!

do you mean you live near or you just are monitoring it? I couldn’t find a live Stansted stream. I was watching an almighty stack for Heathrow for ages 🤓

Orangesandlemons77 · 08/12/2024 14:30

This reminds me of an awful flight DH had a few years back, easyJet up to Glasgow hurricane force winds forecast, I though it would be cancelled but no.

It tried to land twice at Glasgow, couldn't, on the second try was struck by lightning, then got diverted to Newcastle, tried twice there and landing on the second attempt.

he said the young co-pilot was in tears, an ambulance had to meet the plane as a poor lady suffered a heart attack. the winds were forecast so no idea why it flew really.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 08/12/2024 14:40

I love these videos! I watch them all the time.

notimagain · 08/12/2024 15:09

@Orangesandlemons77

he said the young co-pilot was in tears,

Ummm….that’s the 2 i/c of the aircraft, so you’d rather hope they weren’t, and if they really were then certainly not in tears whilst in the view of the paying public…

they offered all the passengers refund /cash for non disclosure on leaving the plane it was that bad. honestly

Sounds stranger by the minute….I can only hope the individual received what ever support they needed post the event and TBF on paper at least that support has improved to some extent in the industry over the years, mainly thanks to the unions.

OTOH it’s fair to say you can have some very tough/stressful/annoying days on the flight deck, that goes with the territory, there’s no way around it…and you need both individuals upfront working together, as a team, most especially on a sub-optimal day.

I was watching on flight radar! Planes almost landing then heading back to point of origin - or near their point of origin. Bonkers.

notimagain · 09/12/2024 07:32

It’s not really that bonkers.

If it’s really crap day or night with widespread bad weather the plan with short haul flights often is to load lots of extra fuel to allow return to the point of origin if a diversion is needed.

The point of origin may well be where the crew/aircraft is based, so it simplifies and speeds up handling …and there’s a fair chance you are simply taking lots of passengers back home.

It’s often a better option than dumping absolutely everybody in hotels and having the aircraft handling done by a third party.
