He's back on now!

wizzywig · 07/12/2024 11:42

Awww he really loves doing this doesn't he.

ProssecoSparkle · 07/12/2024 11:52

Thanks @Cudz will jump back on.

Cudz · 07/12/2024 11:56

They all seem to be landing without too much difficulty at the moment although the gusts if wind sound awful. I wonder how long he will stream for? I was planning on cleaning today but I'm glued to the sofa watching this for the foreseeable 😂

The Heathrow wind in the last report was straight down the runway, i.e. westerly, at 24 knots (about 28 mph).

If that’s consistent there’s not really a crosswind issue at all ATM but it will be turbulent/bumpy.

It’s forecast to veer to more northwesterly this PM so the crosswind returns but the really big crosswinds aren’t forecast to come back in until after dark.

Cudz · 07/12/2024 12:17

@notimagain great explanation thank you! I can't claim to understand any of the conditions, I just enjoy watching the planes attempting to land.

misscockerspaniel · 07/12/2024 09:07

No, why did you have to post this? I am supposed to be cleaning 😀

I know. I didn't expect it to be so addictive!

cakeorwine · 07/12/2024 13:04

RyanAir Dublin to Leeds looks like it's being diverted to Glasgow

Crunchymum · 07/12/2024 13:07

Well that's the weekend sorted for me.

Just showed both DD's the first few planes landing and we're all addicted!!

MintTwirl · 07/12/2024 13:17

That was cute with the little boy and his dad.

In not far from Leeds and the wind has picked up now so definitely worth keeping an eye on flights here.

C8H10N4O2 · 07/12/2024 13:28

BigJet TV on storm days is far too addictive! In one of the major storms a couple of years ago on a client call there were more comments about the landing (and not landing) planes than the subject of the call!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 07/12/2024 13:45

I live near Cardiff airport. Currently tracking the first flight of the day that’s due in as soon as the runway opens - a Ryanair from Dublin.

The wind has definitely eased but it’s still gusty. Fingers crossed for them!

They made it!

Cudz · 07/12/2024 16:18

Anyone still watching? This is insane the planes cannot land head on to the runway due to the winds and are almost sideways when hitting the runway!!

cakeorwine · 07/12/2024 16:18

He's still broadcasting!!

That's dedication

Did anyone just see the BA land, bounce, and then go around?

OP posts:
cakeorwine · 07/12/2024 16:31

Lots more go arounds now

Watching FR and there is some insane stacking around LHR! Plus the Wizzair planes seem to be having trouble at Luton!

Nope, but it’s “allowable” and something that gets trained for and practiced in the simulator - it’s technically known as a baulked landing rather than a go-around.

BTW if anybody wants an example of how the maximum crosswind limits that appear in the aircraft manuals are established, here’s a short, grainy, soundless video of some test pilots doing their stuff in the early days of the 777.

Dreamliner from Jeddah just about to make its second attempt at Heathrow - would hate to be on board!

Madcats · 07/12/2024 16:43

Big Jet TV is ace (I discovered him during one of the lockdowns).

I loved all the kids being driven to the field for stickers this afternoon. Our computer has quite a big screen so I recommend having Flightradar running alongside.

We sometimes stay at Hatton Cross before an early Heathrow flight, so we were delighted to walk past "that" field on the way to The Duke of Wellington pub (which does some great curries in building even the architect would struggle to be pleased with).

Yes I did that was insane. The pilot was so close to landing it and then that huge gust came in and just blew them totally sideways. Amazing to watch. I'm sad he's ended his stream for today but bless him I hope he goes home now for a hot drink and a warm bath! He must be frozen!!!

Pheasantfood · 07/12/2024 17:07

The Emirates flight has just gone around for a 3rd time ! Will have to divert now I think as sure they only get 3 attempts.

XmasElfOnTheShelff · 07/12/2024 17:10

So wish we had ATC voice over.

BoobyDazzler · 07/12/2024 17:10

I’ve been watching the a380 too. Wonder where it ends up. Long day for the passengers!
