Bringing your own condiments?!!

Toddlerteaplease · 06/12/2024 12:14

Was at a pub quiz last night and one of our team decided to order food. But they didn't have any mint sauce to go on his mushy peas. So he went out to his car and bought back an A4 document wallet crammed full of sachets of different sauces that he's taken from other places. Does anyone else actually do this?! The rest of us couldn't quite believe it.

Sounds like a great idea to me! I can only aspire to be organised enough to have an emergency condiment stash

CookieMonster28 · 06/12/2024 12:21

Hilarious!

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/12/2024 12:23

I carry salt everywhere. No one seasons adequately.

I like this bloke. Together we could make any meal gourmet!

orangewasp · 06/12/2024 12:25

I don't but I know someone who uses their glovebox to store condiments, sachets of tea, coffee, sugar, mini containers of longlife milk, disposable cutlery and paper napkins. They come in handy surprisingly often.

TamiTaylorIsMyParentingGuru · 06/12/2024 12:25

This is my mother - except she doesn't intentionally carry them with her, but does often have several in her bag.

Any time she eats out (fairly regularly) she brings home any unopened butters, jams, ketchups, mayos etc and uses them at home. Her viewpoint is that she’s paid for them and she may as well use them. (Or bring them home so someone else can use them if it’s something like ketchup that she doesn’t like.)

They are meant to make it into the fridge at home, but she regularly forgets about them and carries around a wee supply in her bag for several weeks before she remembers to remove them. She has been known to produce them at other restaurants/cafes as well as at other people’s houses

My mum has a separate wallet for her loyalty cards. And heaven forbid we buy a drink and forget to get a stamp. This bloke reminded me of her. 🤣

I used to have a McDonald’s thing of ketchup and a couple sachets of salt in the door pocket of my car, but to keep a folder full of them is a bit weird imo.

My ketchup and salt came in handy regularly when they would forget to put them in the bag of food at the drive thru. They were being replenished very regularly 😂

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 06/12/2024 12:45

@Toddlerteaplease I have to remember to take salt into a certain cafe because it does not have salt available at all!! my hubby used to always carry a bottle of ketchup in the glovebox to eat with chips!

NovemberMorn · 06/12/2024 12:47

OP, good for your team mate, though why the pub didn't have mint sauce to offer to customers is a bit much.

I wish I had thought to take my own stuffing on a recent trip to a Carvery pub...they actually charged £5.60 extra for a portion of stuffing.
They billed it as a 'side dish'.

JBJ · 06/12/2024 12:48

I will admit to having similar (not an A4 folder, but a container in the car full of condiments!), but, in my defence, I'm a regular camper, so I collect them for when I'm away.

TangoFoxtrotCharlie · 06/12/2024 12:50

Absolute legend. I almost wonder if he asked for an unusual sauce just as an opportunity to break out the cache.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 06/12/2024 12:51

Sounds like a genius to me!

I like beef with whole grain mustard and have been tempted to bring some while out for a roast, places only have Coleman's if they have mustard at all.

pinkpjamas1 · 06/12/2024 12:52

No, but I do take a bottle of hot pepper sauce out with me when I eat out at casual places/pubs sometimes. I love spicy food and rarely do they get it hot enough if I order a spicy dish, and if I go to a pub and get a burger or something, I don't want to go without!

Ggmores · 06/12/2024 12:54

I have a little pot of chilli flakes on my keyring - not many places have them!

WickedlyCharmed · 06/12/2024 12:55

I have a small stash of condiments that are carried around with me, and an even bigger stash which I keep in my campervan!

What kind of pub doesn’t have a full compliment of condiments?!

WearyAuldWumman · 06/12/2024 12:57

No, but just before I retired I worked in a school where the LA had decided that salt could no longer be provided to pupils and staff because it was unhealthy.

One day, I made my way to a table with my lunch. A 6th Yr boy, in a manner reminiscent of a wartime spiv hissed: "Mrs Weary!"

I went over and he opened his blazer and withdrew from the inside pocket a small plastic container. He opened it with a flourish, revealing packets of salt purloined from McDonald's: "It tastes like sh*te - ye're goin tae need one o these!"

Last time I saw him, he was doing a degree in nursing.

I seem to have ketchup pots in every handbag. Each time we go to maccy’s I put the spare one in my bag 😂

Mirenamirena · 06/12/2024 13:08

I worked with a man on a project which involved us staying in hotels a lot. He didn’t eat biscuits but would always take the ones that were put in his room (and probably the teas/coffees but he didn’t mention them) to take home for his wife. They came in useful when there were off the cuff meetings with suppliers where nothing had been arranged for catering so we would get coffee from the machine and Adrian would open his back back to bring out a handful. They were often a bit broken though 😀

Tryingtomakeitthroughtheweek · 06/12/2024 13:29

I always have some ketchup packets in my bag, Im not even sure where they come from, Im pressed at the variety he had 😂

My friend routinely carries hot sauce in her handbag

lawlessland · 06/12/2024 14:07

This man is a fucking genius. ❤️

My friend used to collect sachets of sauce and s&p everywhere she went. Never had bottles of ketchup and mayo at home, she'd just get the sachet basket out.

RunVelma · 06/12/2024 14:08

When we were on holiday I took a big squeezey bottle of Heinz tomato sauce and kept it under my youngest’s buggy. It stresses me out waiting for the condiments to arrive. Half the time they forget and meanwhile the food’s going cold. They never bring enough either. Usually one tiny little pot between three kids.

My DH thought I was being ridiculous, but it was a a godsend.
