What sort of spider is this? Is it definitely a false widow? Hoping it's not.

Can't see its back so it's hard to tell.

Would it matter to you if it was a False Widow rather than any other kind of spider?

rewilded · 06/12/2024 12:11

It's the cobweb that's making me think it could be and yes it would matter as there could be an infestation as a friend's new flat.

It's a false widow. Why does it matter that it is one?

JingleB · 06/12/2024 12:16

It’s probably a false widow, although hard to say for sure without seeing its markings.

Why is that a problem? They are just spiders, they aren’t dangerous.

No different to any other spider infestation though.

Just keep an eye out for any more of the little buggers.

How many spiders = an infestation?

Because their bite is quite nasty. I don't mind spiders but false widows if there are a few of them aren't nice.

No spider bites are nice but FW bites are no worse.

OK. That is good to know thanks.

Oh for goodness sake, no it isn’t. No spider bite is fun, but a false widow is no more “nasty” than anything else.

What a lot of fuss about perfectly normal spiders doing no harm.

INeedNewShoes · 06/12/2024 14:37

No need to pile on the OP is there?

False widows got a lot of bad press after someone well know was bitten and reacted badly.

OP, if you ignore your spider lodgers they will ignore you. I think that can be said for all British varieties of spiders.
