water sea GIF

It was 10c in the water today but very calm and no wind. Saw a wee seal poking its head out to watch us.

Any other chilly dippers here?

not had single figures yet 🥶

I’ve never swam in a river.
Will you keep swimming through the winter?

I’ve not been for 10 days. It was also 9 degrees in the river - brrrrr! I’m thinking I need gloves.

Billybagpuss · 04/12/2024 21:22

6 degrees in the lake. Wasn’t feeling too well so wore wet suit.

Octavia64 · 04/12/2024 21:24

Planning on swimming through the winter.

I swam through last winter with a couple of weeks off in Jan for a nasty infection.

I love rivers. Mostly flat. The sea goes up and down so much!

mindutopia · 04/12/2024 21:24

Yes, I swim all year round, though sea is about 50 minutes away so in the winter, I swim more in rivers as closer to home. Went swimming the other week in the snow and it was 7c!

I tried gloves a couple of months ago but couldn’t take to them. Still going in with bare hands and feet but that might change.
I like the feel of the sand under my feet- feels so silky.

In the snow ❄️ that’s an experience I haven’t had yet! 👏🏻👏🏻

I love that the sea changes all the time- sometimes even while you’re in it.

The big waves are fun but I do prefer the calm days- I love to float on my back and just look at the sky. I’ve never swam in a river- I can’t think of any suitable ones around where I live.

keep going through the winter 👏🏻🥶👍🏻

I like it too but I’ve been working too many hrs to get out to the coast in the evenings so it’s just been the river. Feels colder than the sea (how?!)

TheNinthLock · 04/12/2024 21:40

In the lake. Almost every week. 7.4degrees last weekend 😊. No wetsuit but did wear gloves and socks xx

Feelingstrange2 · 04/12/2024 21:42

Not me, but the town sea swimming group go all through winter.

I'd like to join them as I'm a good swimmer but....

I don't like seaweed
I don't like jellyfish
I seem to pick up ear infections a lot from the sea
I don't like the cold when clothed, dread to think what it would be like in swimmers
I'm a wuss

Well done you!

Ocean Sea GIF by Monterey Bay Aquarium

I think the sea keeps its heat (whatever little heat there is!) longer into the winter but then takes longer to warm up again in the spring. The river probably reacts more quickly to land temperatures.

Best thing about when the sea gets cold is - no blooming jellyfish!

I can’t manage to wear neoprene gloves never mind a wet suit. Fair play to you though, 6 is cold 🥶 👏🏻

Edited

I agree with you on the seaweed & jellyfish, they’re horrible. We don’t have too much trouble with seaweed, except when there’s been a storm. Most of the time the water is clear down to the sand.

I hate that ‘seaweed soup’ you sometimes get close in to shore after a storm, usually when you wade out a bit it’s clear but it’s very murky getting there, and it gets into my swimsuit! 😫

Yeah I'm in east Anglia and we get a lot of reeds in the rivers.

Not too bad this time of year but the rivers vary from murky to completely clear.

iwantavuvezela · 04/12/2024 21:52

I go to our open air lido - its about 8 at the moment

Pouri · 04/12/2024 21:53

I’m not doing any swimming this year due to ill health at the moment but my local group still is doing swims, we’re in the north of Scotland, so it’s nippy, looking forward to resuming next year!

poopoobarneymcgrew · 04/12/2024 21:56

Still dipping in local river four mornings a week I love it! Today was one of the hardest days yet water was about 5 degrees but air temp much colder so it was a quick in, splash about then out! Painfully cold on hands gonna try wearing gloves. But I love it!

That sounds like a good local facility, nice that it stays open in the winter.

Not sure I could cope with a murky river. Do you go with a group?
