What does it all mean ?

TheWiseFish · 04/12/2024 20:57

I really don't know but apparently it's major news as its the first time in 60 years this has happened.

I'll take a guess that it means that the right wing will be in next

My understanding is that basically France is hugely in debt - their debt levels are now double the limits set by the EU, the bond markets are going to start punishing them, and whoever is PM needs to find something like E60bn of annual savings (or tax increases). Barnier put something together that wouldn't have even scratched the surface and couldn't even get that through.

LaPalmaLlama · 04/12/2024 21:03

So basically their budget deficit is 6% GDP and EU fiscal rules say it can be a max of 3%.

DogInATent · 04/12/2024 21:03

Macron has to find someone else to appoint that can command confidence of the Assembly. It's been pretty well explained in the serious media. It's the fallout of calling the snap election wrong.

PickAChew · 04/12/2024 21:03

I don't think this vote changes much directly, for now, from what I've seen but it does pave the way for turning against Macron.

It's France so you can guarantee a few demonstrations and maybe a riot or two.

Macron is not liked by his people anyways. Didn't his party find a loophole to get into govt last election?

If French history teaches any lessons, they will mill around like headless chickens for a while and then we will have a 6th Republic.

We really could have a modern day French Revolution.. Sacre bleu!

Oh wow! This one was not on my 2024 bingo card. Barnier hoisted by his own petard.
