How do you decide which clothes to declutter?

Especially kids clothes? I can do my clothes fine but when it comes to my kids clothes I struggle. Worn out but still has life? What do you do? Faded? Holes...if theyre big I'll get rid of.

Surely kids clothes are easy?
Do they still fit? No - out they go for current child
Will a younger child realistically wear it - yes then keep, no then out it goes.

With children the best thing is to not over-buy as you don't get the wear as they outgrow.

I generally wait for them to grow out of something unless it gets a big hole in. Small stains and holes are fine for play clothes.

Once they grow out of them, clothes that are still good are donated and the ruined clothes go in fabric recycling.

I thought you were starting a thread more on how to 'get rid' of adult clothing, especially your own.
Now that I sometimes struggle with.
Kid's clothes are easy; they either fit, or they don't. If they are in good, clean condition, someone will want them, easiest thing, donate to a charity.

Well I don't mind you telling me how to declutter adult clothing either 😂

I'm having trouble with it all. I have minimal but I never know when to get rid.

Adult clothes. If you have minimal maybe you don't need to declutter.
Otherwise

  • does it still fit? No? then out it goes unless you expect to shrink/epand in next year or so.
  • day to day wear - has it been worn in last year? if so keep
  • expensive formal / eveningwear - has it been worn in last 5 years? if so keep

For my kids I go through their drawers about twice a year and hold up items /chrck lables. Anything which looks a bit small goes in a bin bag and gets passed on or taken to charity. If it's questionable size wise I get them to try it on. We also have a basket in the airing cupboard so they can chuck clothes that don't fit anymore into it. Anything too badly damaged or stained goes in the bin.

Yes when my DC were growing I went through summer clothes in ~April and winter clothes in ~September and out went anything they had grown out of. I generally hoped to get at least 2 years wear.

TheShellBeach · 04/12/2024 16:28

Anything that's the wrong size goes to the charity shop.

Anything that hasn't been worn for a year also goes.

Obviously there are summer and winter clothes, so you're not able to throw them out any faster.
