Women have now been banned from attending their nursing and midwifery courses at university.

Female patients are only allowed to be attended to by a female unless accompanied by their male escort. This means that thousands of women will now be giving birth by themselves if they can't find a midwife, which are already in short supply. Afghanistan has the highest rate of maternal mortality in the world.

Women at training colleges across the country were told they are not allowed to return to class.

Most countries have patriarchy of some kind, and male privilege, but what possible benefit can there be to the men in stopping women being midwives?

Educated women fight back.

Not only that but I suspect a subliminal fear that educated women will know just how fucking dumb these 'leaders' are.

It’s absolutely disgusting what is happening to women and girls in Afghanistan. What can we do?

Grant immediate refugee status to any Afghan woman or girl who makes it to the UK. If the political will was there, the Govt could do this tomorrow.

Was she the one who was teaching women English? I was nearly in tears listening to her.

Yes, that's the one.

It just keeps getting worse! I'm absolutely horrified by what is happening to the women and girls of Afghanistan.

WhatTheFudges · 03/12/2024 22:09

No idea why any British citizens are getting on their high horse, you say about helping these women against the Taliban, we can’t even help ourselves against posh toffs, so how in the world could we help stand up against brutal men?
We accept the crap the government put on us even if we don’t like it, I imagine the same goes for these women, they don’t like it, but what can they do in reality? Nothing. So those shaming or questioning why nothing is being done, I imagine it’s for the same reasons nothing here is done.

Im afghan and my heart breaks. Just 7 years ago in 2019 i visited and i was overjoyed at the progress that had been made. Now i only feel despair.

Maybe they've read their classical history, and are planning to imitate Romulus ?

Taliban males cannot read. They are utterly thick . That's why they hate women so much. They know that educated women would simply laugh at them.

caringcarer · 03/12/2024 22:12

Such a sick regime. Those poor women.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 03/12/2024 22:22

Every single piece of news coming from there is more awful than the last. Women there have no agency, they can't just decide to not get married, or to leave bad marriage where they may be raped. Then when they inevitably get pregnant and already have the highest birth mortality in the world, their male leaders decide to chuck in a complete ban on medical care! It is the most horrific place on earth to be a woman and it just got worse. Words fail me.

AshCrapp · 03/12/2024 22:29

Horrifying beyond belief. All those poor women who will die in pain, all those women for whom pregnancy won't be a reason to celebrate, but will be a death sentence.

Their motivation most likely is fear of educated women, combined with valuing women so little that they literally don't care if they live or die. Perhaps they even purposefully want women to constantly fear for their lives by denying them essential care, so that they know that their lives hang by a thread.

What can be done?

GladAllOver · 03/12/2024 22:31

And Iran is going the same way!

Igmum · 03/12/2024 22:36

Horrific. Those poor women. I would like to see us offering sanctuary to every Afghan woman

Dibbydoos · 03/12/2024 22:38

I really think we should offer every woman the opportunity to relocate elsewhere. Leave these stupid men on their own and watch the population die off. And my view goes for every oppressed woman in tge world including USA citizens who are forced to go through with unwanted pregnancies.

Agreed & to Iranian women too. I've no idea how the women carry on except through fear of not leaving their children. Otherwise if I'd no kids, I imagine I'd take matters into my own hands and be done.

IncessantNameChanger · 03/12/2024 22:45

Surely they are self limiting their future? If I was a woman there I'd either top myself or find a way to never give birth to a girl.

As a side point, how do the mums seek help for their kids when they can't travel or talk? I can't see the dads taking time out to take the kids to the gp. Utter madness but more than one person thinks this is a good idea.

levantine · 03/12/2024 22:48

This makes feel absolutely sick. So upsetting.

dinomirror · 03/12/2024 22:49

This shit is the reason taliban wont last another decade or two in my opinion, i just hope the next wont be worse

viques · 03/12/2024 22:55

justasking111 · 03/12/2024 17:57

Who's going to nurse these men if they are injured or unwell?

I expect the wise chaps of the Taliban have reasoned that men don’t get pregnant so don’t need midwives.

They might change their minds when their wives, daughters, sisters and nieces start dying in childbirth. And they will certainly change their minds when precious boy babies are born dead or injured after avoidable birth trauma.

viques · 03/12/2024 22:59

Igmum · 03/12/2024 22:36

We didn’t even manage to offer safety and security to the brave Afghan women who tried to change things by standing for the Afghani Parliament, worked as lawyers, journalists or as translators. Many of them were denied help to leave.

thenightsky · 03/12/2024 23:11

No doubt it will become the birthing mother's fault and punishable by whipping or worse.

Beigepuppydog · 03/12/2024 23:27

MrsPeterHarris · 03/12/2024 21:15

This! It's horrendous & shameful that western governments have allowed this to happen following their withdrawal!

Western governments didn't think all was going to be fine after their withdrawal. That isn't why they did it. They handed Afghanistan over to the Taliban knowing it wasn't going to be fine. For whatever reasons each government had, they decided that was the least worst option.

I reckon after the global pandemic nobody can afford a war so that's why nobody is doing anything.

I'm no expert in it all but Britain had an empire once, we supposedly brought "civilization" (our ways) to the "uncivilised" parts of the world (where they did things differently). Yet each of those countries was happy to gain independence again. So I'm not sure taking over the world and forcing everyone to adopt our way of life is something that works. If we don't take over other countries (by going to war and invading them), we can't make them do anything.

OytheBumbler · 03/12/2024 23:49

I don't think there's any reason behind their madness. The taliban are the ruling class and women/babies are collateral. They just don't matter.

Their own wives/children will receive healthcare obviously.

PassingStranger · 03/12/2024 23:50

Dreadful.

Challas · 03/12/2024 23:57

It works out quite well for them really. They get to marry an even younger wife most likely a child when the older more troublesome one dies in childbirth. It's far easier to control a child you sexually abuse than a woman. I don't know what the answer is here. Western nations don't want the long term cost of intervention and their fighting against a culture that on some level approves of seeing women as property.
