Would you do a 6am flight home from holiday?

My partner has booked our holiday
He has chose a flight home from Tenerife at 6am back to Manchester.
Our transfer is picking us up at 2.30am
It's honestly making me miserable thinking about it.
He can't see anything wrong with this.
Please tell me I'm not alone in thinking this is a shocking time to get picked up.

I once had a 6am flight and then didn’t have a room for the night checkin had been at 2am but counted as day before obviously when you think about it. Left hotel on a bus at midnight got to airport at 1:30am. Queued till 3am when check in desk opened. Nowhere open in airport. Flight home I was exhausted.

I’d rather have the full nights sleep, an extra 12 hours on holiday, and a leisurely breakfast and lunch.

Landing home at 10am having been up for at least 24 hours - no thanks! That’s not worth £160 to me.

But you’re saving £360 by not needing the extra night? You could have a lovely late last meal for that, some swanky cocktails, and get home the next day to relax, sleep, then sort yourself out.

Doggymummar · 02/12/2024 21:05

I would love it. A full day at home to unpack do the washing etc before back to work.

I'd just not go to bed. Dinner, drinks, have a quick shower and pack then head to airport. Not ideal but that's a BIG saving.

Blueberrymuffin8 · 02/12/2024 21:07

Did he even ask you if you were OK with that before he booked? If not, he is an absolute selfish d*ck.

RunningForMySanity · 02/12/2024 21:08

Nope would hate that. We are away currently and have a 9pm flight home tomorrow. With kids that would be too late but we are away without, so have a leisurely morning until midday checkout then planning on spending our last day chilling on the beach / having a lazy big lunch so we can just grab sandwiches later.
With kids would just prefer a middle of the day flight

fridaynight1 · 02/12/2024 21:10

I wouldn't be happy either OP. I'd definitely pay to get better flights.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/12/2024 21:11

I've never had an early flight back like that . We sometimes have a flight at that time out of the UK but it doesn't seem so bad on the way there. Our return flights tend to be around lunchtime-ish.

I don't really like later flights though as you tend to be hanging around all day . Looking at the difference in cost of your flight though - I can see why he's done that. It makes a big difference when you are looking at the cost for two people .

OverthinkingOlive · 02/12/2024 21:13

I couldn't be fucked with that

stargazerlil · 02/12/2024 21:15

God no, it’s supposed to be a relaxing break, not challenge anneka

HooMoo · 02/12/2024 21:15

6am flight on the way there fine! But on the way back nooo! I think as well I’d be so anxious the taxi wouldn’t arrive at that time in the morning whereas when you’re going there you generally drive so it’s a bit more in your control etc. we recently had a flight back at 10:05 and that felt stressful!

Delatron · 02/12/2024 21:15

No -that ruins the last night of a precious holiday. For £160 I would rather have a nice last evening, a good sleep, breakfast and a few
more hours at the hotel/ in the sun.

LIZS · 02/12/2024 21:15

No, it is not worth paying the hotel for a night you don't get to use. Normally fly afternoon/early evening

christmasdee · 02/12/2024 21:16

I don't mind a 6am flight on holiday
Your at the hotel by 11am and it's great when your away but the way back is different.
There's gonna be nothing open at the airport is there.

@WickedlyCharmed yep Ryanair and it was £21.99 each
There's a jet 2 for £180 each for 6pm which I would of much prefered

I would 100% be booking the later flight. Worth it for £180 for me to actually have an extra day on holiday and not be a zombie due to lack of sleep when I get home. No wonder it was so cheap!!

Alittlebitwary · 02/12/2024 21:17

Genuinely, just book it. Tell him later 😂 sack off the £20 flights.

VeryQuaintIrene · 02/12/2024 21:18

I wouldn't like it, but for 160 quid cheaper, I'd do it! Or at least I definitely would have in my younger days.

Beck2017 · 02/12/2024 21:18

I have done 6am flights both outbound and return but, I was younger and childfree and I was living in London where I had a choice of 4 possible journeys home. I also had a hail mary driver

Twofurrycats · 02/12/2024 21:21

I don't like early flights home but I'd probably do it to save money. The big if for me is how long the holiday is. A week or more I'd do the early flight, a short break I wouldn't.

Onlyvisiting · 02/12/2024 21:21

I wouldn't unless essential. Its a waste of a night's accommodation, has he allowed for that in the cost calculation? It effectively makes your holiday a day shorter, I'd rather just leave during the day the day before.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/12/2024 21:21

My H refuses to do flights outside of 9.30am to 7.30 pm either going out or coming back unless it's something long haul with big time differences and flights at night

So where we go often depends on what flights available and we often go from Heathrow rather than Bristol which is way closer

RawBloomers · 02/12/2024 21:21

That wouldn’t exactly ruin the holiday for me, but it would make it a lot less pleasant than I’d want. I can’t manage skipping a night of sleep (and I wouldn’t get any sleep with that schedule) so it would set me up for a horrible return to reality. That’s just not what I want from a holiday. I’d also consider it a complete waste of money if the hotel is paid for for the night.

I’ve never booked a holiday with someone without confirming all the details before booking so I find it difficult to know whether this is a reasonable suggestion but I’d certainly be considering booking myself the Jet 2 flight.

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 02/12/2024 21:24

If it's that much of an issue cancel the flights and book the later - or just book the later but you should pay for both of you yourself!

it's a lot of money and I'm team DH. £360 for a few more hours? Nah!

STST · 02/12/2024 21:25

Ha - I’d definitely pick the 6.30am flight even if it was more expensive! Horses for courses I guess.

As PP’s have pointed out, there are upsides. Bliss to get home at the beginning of the day, get unpacked, washing on, fridge stocked, afternoon nap and all is back on course.

Hate the last/travelling day of holiday if it involves hanging around all day, no room, everything in bags, watching the clock to make sure breakfast/lunch/dinner doesn’t go on too long, changing clothes in a toilet if you’ve spent the day at the beach, not to mention if the flight home is delayed and you’re just stuck….

Hate arriving home late with masses of unpacking/washing and a to do list a mile long that I can’t action cos it’s so late.

I always insist on earliest possible flight home. holiday over at the end of the last full day in my opinion, travel days don’t count, they’re just something to be got through.

Plus £160 richer.
