Christmas nonsense that can get in the sea

YimYum · 02/12/2024 14:30

Matching family pyjamas
Matching family jumpers
Photoshoots involving the above
The Elf
Christmas Eve boxes
Hot chocolate stations
Light trails

This is all just absolute nonsense that people are being sucked into by advertising and social media #makingmemories scams.

There, you're welcome. From a Grinch.

OP posts:

Christmas trees decked out with 'blush ' coloured baubles and feathers. Feathers on a tree just no. Unless you're a bird and you're moulting.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 03/12/2024 20:54

December viruses can get in the sea! I don’t do most of the things on the list in the OP, but fair play to the people who do and enjoy them.

okydokethen · 03/12/2024 21:00

Yeah I'm not doing any of those OP ... I like a light trail but they are expensive here and often rainy

Can we add people reading/seeing things on the internet, not wanting to do them, oddly seeming to have super strong opinions about doing/not doing them and then starting threads saying they should be banned? I'd throw that right in the sea 😂

If you like it, do it, if you don't like it, don't do it? Avoiding FB/insta/tik too is great for hardly even having this stuff on your radar fyi

I get that in principle and I'm usually live and let live, but it is hard to avoid these things if you have kids. It's not as easy as saying get off social media.

I don't like elf on the shelf but nursery are sending us photos of it on the app every weekday. I don't have a school-aged child but I expect there is some real-life pressure to make sure your kid isn't missing out on the latest Christmas fad.

So it's not completely innocent. It's pressure to spend more, do more, take on more emotional labour at Christmas.

I'm not saying don't do these things if they truly make you happy. I just think it's okay for the rest of us to have a bit of a moan about it on the internet

ThePoliteLion · 03/12/2024 21:17

Christmas cards are a total pain in the arse. Where to put them? Last year I fell off a chair and made a dent in my knee while attaching a piece of string to the ceiling to hang the wretched things on. Then there’s the writing of them. Sometimes to people you sincerely mean to see, but don’t, so you once again write “see you next year!”. It’s Groundhog Day and faintly depressing.
Actually, watching the film Groundhog Day would be a better use of time. A classic Christmas movie, without a single bauble.
I’d love to cancel Christmas cards.

crying laughing 🤣

Dog and owner were wearing matching clothing. I'm not even joking.

This is a bit of old one but the pretence that it will be snowy/frosty/cold at Christmas!

No we all know it will be rainy/windy/warm. Probably torrents of rain. ☔️ 🌧️

I went to Madeira one Christmas. It was warm, even at night. Bloody loved it!

Elf on the shelf and all the morons who play along. Christmas eve boxes can fuck right off, unless a replacement stocking for older kids. In which case just call it a stocking… Children in secondary school who ‘still believe’ can also get in the sea.

You sound nice....

Lump of coal for you I think.

You know your last sentence has made me feel rather hypocritical as I do love a good moan on the internet 😂

A lot of this shit comes from tik tok

And I hate tik tok

Therefore it can all get in the bin

Saw Christmas Eve boxes for dogs the other day! A new low!

OMG. I am officially giving up on the human race. There is no coming back from this.

Horses7 · 03/12/2024 21:46

Grandkids love our Christmas Eve boxes (started by chance years ago) and putting stuff out for Santa/reindeers and love our elf too (he’s quite boring for an elf eg he never puts clingfilm over the toilet). We had several types of wooden advent calendars that we put chocs - much better value than cardboard ones.
I would have us all in matching pjs but that’s a step too far I think for family but we all wear Christmas themed clothes/nightwear on Christmas morning. We have lots of traditions that we do every year and have a great time - if we didn’t we’d stop.
H and I worked hard for long hours when our own kids were little, time and money were short, but now we’ve the time and spare cash to do everything we wanted to do back then and it’s fab.

Mylittlebobble · 03/12/2024 22:04

DD has asked for an elf but I've said we don't do that in this house. Felt guilty saying no but haven't got the band width for any more wife work.

JazzieC · 03/12/2024 22:26

My kids are late teens and early twenties now. I'm so glad Elf on a shelf wasn't really a thing when they were younger. I loathe it - it genuinely gives me the creeps.

Having said that I'm a sucker for a light trail and a cheesy Christmas film!

Soonenough · 03/12/2024 22:30

Guess it is all on TikTok now but I still see those magazines that have headings like " How to have a Happy Hearth " "Xmas glow up for parties " "Table settings to wow your guests" . I could have the fanciest table but I still have to seat my sister who needs 3 glasses and my BIL who tucks his lovely Xmas napkin on his neck. And teens who refuse to dress up too much .

CrowleyKitten · 04/12/2024 00:59

SharpOpalNewt · 02/12/2024 15:02

Well, I've resisted buying them until DDs are 15 and 19 if that helps. They have both finished growing, and I got L for DH, which should even accommodate a festive cheese belly.

My Christmas jumper dates from at least ten years ago and still fits fine.

Our Christmas tree is so old we got it from Woolworths. I have some tree ornaments that date from the 1940s.

Edited

I ordered a new Christmas jumper recently. because it has a coiled snake that is similar to the one on my face tattoo, but on the jumper it is facing up, instead of "sauntering vaguely downwards" hope it comes soon. it has the snake, Christmas trees, planchettes and snowflakes. it looks fantastic

Vates · 04/12/2024 04:45

Mine was mentioned on the first page of responses... Cranberries in everything! I cannot stand them. I don't eat meat so looking through the vegetarian Christmas offerings it is always a case of trying to find one that doesn't include sodding cranberries! My Sister is cooking Christmas dinner for her family and myself. I told her not to buy anything fancy or Christmas themed specifically for me. I will just bring my own pack of veggie sausages as that is the easiest option.

Are you one of those morons? Uh oh. The thread is about ‘Christmas Nonsense’ my post was very much in the spirit of the OP’s.

Dogsbreath7 · 04/12/2024 07:20

Not if you don’t buy any of this shit. It isn’t compulsory.

my wrapping paper is printed brown paper so I can at least use it to start the log burner. But plead guilty to a childhood of plastic toys- how do you avoid it?

OldMam · 04/12/2024 07:54

What is a ‘light trail?

WinterFrog · 04/12/2024 08:07

We used to get the children new pyjamas at Christmas. Money was tight but it was the one 'tradition' we were guaranteed to do. Plus stockings of course. Who doesn't love a new pair of pyjamas? Ours weren't festive themed though, and nobody's matched. That's something they remember with warmth, so I was told last weekend.

Silverfoxette · 04/12/2024 08:21

Never heard of a light trail. I agree with the rest of your list though 😅

AnneButNotHathaway · 04/12/2024 08:33

Ngl, I love themed photoshoot 😂Yes, they look very unnatural but they are still nice! One can make a Christmas slideshow afterwards and email it all the annoying relatives.
The Elf, though, this one I don't get and don't like at all.
