Christmas nonsense that can get in the sea

Matching family pyjamas
Matching family jumpers
Photoshoots involving the above
The Elf
Christmas Eve boxes
Hot chocolate stations
Light trails

This is all just absolute nonsense that people are being sucked into by advertising and social media #makingmemories scams.

There, you're welcome. From a Grinch.

Those cheesy naff Christmas films like elf or home alone or nativity. Yuck boring! Give me a thriller/ghost story, preferably set in snowy winter. I'll watch it with just the Christmas tree lights on, and a large glass of good wine.

Ooh I know what you mean. I love to watch an Agatha Christie with family and a box of chocs.

eebytat · 03/12/2024 18:36

Most of it! My daughter has never been a massive Santa fan, have always felt I’ve had to ‘create the magic’ and it’s felt forced. This year not doing any of the over priced Xmas events, have never done the stupid elf! Our tree is tiny as we have a very small sitting room.
I asked her if she missed having a bigger tree and she said not at all. She also said she much prefers birthdays to Xmas.
Its my birthday a few days before and her Dads a few days after so maybe that’s clouding my judgement!!!!

Agreed

Also Christmas decs going up 3/4 weeks before Christmas

And photos of other people's tree

Today my child sobbed and begged me for an elf. Apparently, everyone has a 'magic' elf who does amazing tricks every day

I'm 34 and the decs have always gone up 1st weekend of December. I've just carried it on with my family. It's not a new thing

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 03/12/2024 19:20

Presents mostly. I dislike buying them and I dislike pretending I like the ones I am given. But I love Xmas films and Nativity the original at least is brilliant I work in secondary schools so I've always wondered how primary works, so I treat it as if it's a documentary. And it's got Pam Ferris and Ricky Tomlinson in it Martin Freeman and that bloke of the Wire, Ashley Jenson and that bloke Jason off Mcdonald and Dodds. You have to admit that is some cast.

Single50something · 03/12/2024 19:22

Agree with most OP but love the lights. Less love for being charged more than a kidney to see the lights
I also hate pumpkin patches/photos of pumpkin picking...most of which just get wasted
I guess with social media everything has become heightened and must keep up with the joneses and love all bloody occasions..

Needmorelego · 03/12/2024 19:22

@Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun but how will Santa know what the dog wants for Christmas if the dog doesn't tell him ?

The dog I saw was shitting itself at the sight of Santa, who looked utterly bemused. Dog was also wearing a jumper.

Elf on the shelf and all the morons who play along. Christmas eve boxes can fuck right off, unless a replacement stocking for older kids. In which case just call it a stocking… Children in secondary school who ‘still believe’ can also get in the sea.

Why do you think people who enjoy something you don’t are morons?

Needmorelego · 03/12/2024 19:47

@Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun shitting itself with excitement or terror?
If terror then that's not fair to the dog and it's owners should take it home.
If excitement then they it's owners should have put a nappy on it !

Heyheyitsanotherday · 03/12/2024 19:50

I don’t like the social media show offs as it’s cringe and just makes some
people feel bad they can’t/don’t want to do whatever it is that is being shown off about.

But otherwise…. If it makes people happy and It doesn’t affect me in the slightest…Enjoy! Christmas is about being with family and friends…. If you are lucky enough to have that. So why would we criticise anyone for doing things with their loved ones that bring them joy?? Odd

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear…. I think you should do this before you bp goes any higher 🙈🤣

CalmMintReader · 03/12/2024 19:53

Agree with all apart from light trails, I am partial to those as they are pretty make me feel festive, I like wrapping up on a cold night for a walk with the family, toast marshmallows (take your own) and a tipple in the bar at the end.

Add to that seeing endless photos of boozy parties/night out with big friend groups - I’m a bit of an introvert and have a small number of individual friends so they just make me feel weird and crap for not being like that.

Can we add people reading/seeing things on the internet, not wanting to do them, oddly seeming to have super strong opinions about doing/not doing them and then starting threads saying they should be banned? I'd throw that right in the sea 😂

If you like it, do it, if you don't like it, don't do it? Avoiding FB/insta/tik too is great for hardly even having this stuff on your radar fyi

This!! A thousand times this!

I don't think it was enjoying itself unfortunately. It was more for the owner's benefit.

monsterflake · 03/12/2024 20:26

Having to book everything months in advance! Even when my 13 year old was a toddler it was possible to just go to the shopping centre to see santa, wait in a queue for a little while, no booking required. I'm incapable of thinking of things like this in August. Apparently even a walk round the Christmas display at the garden centre needs to be booked now, it's like nothing is spontaneous and all about the photos for social media rather than the experience

Needmorelego · 03/12/2024 20:27

@Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun in that case it does sound mean to the dog.
But a lot of the dogs I know would think it's fantastic fun !

StaunchMomma · 03/12/2024 20:39

I quite liked the Xmas Eve boxes when DS was younger, mainly because it gave me the opportunity to set him up for a quiet evening of new Xmas PJs/Xmas film/popcorn & hot choc with visiting family, giving me the opportunity to crack the bubbly and start peeling a mountain of sprouts.

The bastard elf can be yeeted into the sun, tho.

LIJ · 03/12/2024 20:45

I totally agree. It’s all total commercial nonsense.
