I try, I really do. But I cant stand this time of year. So isolating.

Lots of comments ringing true with me too. I hate having to pretend everything is ok with my lazy twat of a husband in front of the family. It just feels like an extra bunch of work for me to do because every single present/item of food gets bought and prepped by me. When the kids open theirs he often says...ooh who got you that? They say..you did. Each time they say say that, I'm silently adding the 'you lazy twat' on the end of it.

Counting the days until it's all over

My mil went on holiday last year for the week before Christmas and flew home on 25/12. Much cheaper.

We have officially cancelled it. The tree was donated to charity, no Xmas songs, no nothing.

It is blissful!

It was too triggering, too much pressure, too much fakery, too much indulgence, too much money spent.

There’s just DH, me and t dog here for Christmas and I have decided that I’m not busting a gut and spending money just for the sake of it any more.
I fancy steak and chips for Christmas dinner, DH can have whatever he likes and that will be the sum total of effort I make this year. No decorating, false gaiety or having to pretend all is joy and light. I never get any Christmas presents for me, nor birthday ones either (a few days before Christmas).
I can’t wait for Christmas and the New Year to be over.

fedup33 · 04/12/2024 17:05

I don't want anybody to be unhappy but it seems a few of us share the same views.

My DH and I stopped celebrating Christmas 14 years ago. It might sound odd but the reason being we're Christians. We looked into the origins of the celebration and discovered it is largely a pagan festival and the Catholic church has tried to christianise it. But we are not catholics. The evergreen decorations, Yule log, lights etc are all pagan symbols. Even Santa originates from the god Odin and gifts were originally left out to appease him and to ward off evil spirits. We enjoy seeing family and friends over the holiday but avoid everything else connected with Christmas and feel much better for it.

I don't celebrate 25th because that is the Christian date.

We mark the winter solstice on the 21st when the longest night and the shortest day marks the return of the sun.

We don't do a tree because I refuse to kill a tree. We snip a few holly branches and place them around. We have spiced drinks and a little feast. Father Christmas for us is the Holly King, all dressed in green and the person who pulls a sleigh of (female) reindeer is Elen of the Ways. A British goddess who used to herd native reindeer and lead the way in winter. Her gifts are warmth, wisdom food, and light.

All things in balance ✨️

This is also open on Christmas Day! But not the cafe/gift shop, so hopefully no bloody carol singers etc. Just lots of very calm donkeys, doing their thing.

The walks down to the sea are beautiful too.

Honestly, OP, you are very much not alone. I love midnight mass, but am always very glad when the whole Christmas shebang is over.

This is likely to be my first year without DD as she'll go to her dad's on Xmas day. I'm going all out on Christmas eve but do feel a pang of sadness inside me too. It's hard.

Lottapianos · 04/12/2024 18:02

LOVE those Marian Keyes videos! I always rewatch them at this time of year, as a little booster inoculation against the Christmas and New Year madness 😁

I'm actually envious of those without children. I don't have the option of not celebrating (but sure I will when they're older and moved out). It's hard to pretend you're fine when you're not.

Hate Hogmanay and all that tartan shite.
It just gives arseholes an excuse to be bigger arseholes with a drink in them.
And yes I'm from Scotland.

I have the info on the Keswick get togethers. If you want more info please PM me, Thanks.

Christmas is bearable but I've no interest in big get togethers. Growing up it was always just the four of us and nowadays only me and OH as it's too much of a faff for family to travel and we don't have room to host.

Hate NY with a passion. I've now started going to bed before the bells but then can't sleep for neighbours letting off fireworks that sound like mortar bombs.

Oh that's fantastic! I lived in Sidmouth for a year. I never made it to the donkey sanctuary but that's my new plan for this Xmas.

Here's a pic from 2020 - Father Christmases kayaking around the bay, anyone?

Go! East Devon's just beautiful, and relatively unknown.

Just watched and made notes! Absolutely loved it and made me smile.

"Expectations are simply disappointments under construction" - so true!

Definitely worth a watch when you have a spare 14 mins. Thanks for sharing @Orangesandlemons77
