WTF moments from childhood

I vividly remember sitting in a circle at primary school and playing a game (facilitated by teachers). It was a variation on ‘spin the bottle’ and this boy named the girl he wanted to kiss. The feeling was not mutual from her end and she began running around and around the circle, trying to evade both the boy and the disgraceful teachers trying to hold her down. Vile. How was this a thing? All I remember was sitting there thinking ‘thank goodness this isn’t me’.

This was 1989…

In my forties so I went to secondary school in the 90's. I went to an apparently "good" (expensive) private school in London.
Lots of inappropriate things happened but I clearly remember my French teacher would make a continuous joke about me "marrying the man down the road with the dog and white stick " during lessons. WTAF so inappropriate on so many levels. I didn't even think it was strange at the time it just made me feel slightly confused and sad!

@murasaki @newbie887 I think I have a photo petting the same crocodile! I look terrified and I remember saying "Just take the photo!" to my brother through gritted teeth while he spent ages lining up the perfect shot.

I look back now and think I was absolutely crazy to do that. Charlie must have been drugged, surely?

Dontlletmedownbruce · 30/11/2024 09:55

We knitted wool vests for a charity to help the 'black babies'. Mid 80s. I think it was possibly related to the Ethiopian famine, there was no context or education around it. I've no doubt it was a helpful initiative, but black babies! Wtf

Well, I knew this thread would make me seethe, but I looked anyway.
Another country - most of these fucking adult arseholes were criminals in the way they treated the (powerless) children, be it parents, relatives, friends or teachers.
I'm 45 and very happy that some got their comeuppances.

I remember getting a question wrong in Spanish class in high school.
Teacher made the entire class recite 'it's very easy, my name' at me in Spanish. As a very shy studious kid it was completely humiliating. I've often thought I'd love to bump into her as adults on equal footing and tell her what a cruel vindictive person she is.

Mind you, a teacher had my 9yo in tears just last year after screaming in her face for asking to be excused from participating in a science activity and watch instead because she's allergic to one of the ingredients they were using.

So I'm not optimistic much has changed tbh. Maybe a bit less overt sexual harassment.

Blimey... that is a bit 😳 😬

About 1973. We all had a draw a picture on a circular piece of paper. I decided to draw the teacher - Miss Wand (I hate her to this day)

I took the picture to her desk, very proud of it, and she immediately ripped it up, slapped me on the kegs a few times, and threw it across the room.

It was so humiliating and very painful, and I still have no idea why.
I didn't tell my mum - I'm not sure why, but remember crying for a few days after.

It just seemed...normal I guess

How is Charlie so famous?!? That’s amazing three people on the same thread have been to the same place! I wonder if they still allow people down into the pit, or if there were any mishaps through all the yrs of Charlie meeting.

This actually happened at my sixth form in 2009! Teacher who was married (but later came out as gay and his wife divorced him) used to invite (predominantly male) students to his house for a drink or would quite often turn up to our nights out. Weird.
We also had a music teacher who was sleeping with a girl when she was in year 11. Not all this sordid shit happened that long ago unfortunately

Eyerollexpert · 30/11/2024 10:24

I was a very Nieve 16 year old, lived in a very small village and parents who never taught about the birds and the bees. At college in sociology lesson the hippy teacher went around the room asking each of us how often we thought an adult couple had sex in a week WTF. Unfortunately I was one of the mmmfirst asked and I answered 21 he thought it was a random number and made me explain. Once in a morning, once at night and probably went home for lunch and sex was my answer. I never lived it down and still am mortified, I also couldn't understand when I became so popular with the lads

MarmaladeSideDown · 30/11/2024 10:28

At our primary school, they once asked during an assembly for volunteers to sing in a choir. About 20 of us put our hands up, and then we had to stand on the stage and sing together while someone played the piano. A teacher said they would walk behind us to listen and if we weren't good enough they would tap us on the head and we had to sit down. Guess who was the only one who had to sit down? I never got over the sheer humiliation of that in front of the entire school.

Dreamsfallapartattheseams · 30/11/2024 10:34

In our primary school one of our male teachers would often take a couple of his pupils home for lunch with him.

Luckily I was never chosen as I used to go home for lunch but my two friends distinctly remember going and his wife making them sandwiches. Hopefully all very innocent but it does make you shudder a little.

Yup I agree! My daughter is year 4 now and they all get changed in the classroom in front of the boys. I don't understand why they can't either wear PE kit to school on PE day, or not get changed at all.

Most schools I think they do come to school in PE kit - I think this was from the Covid days and has stuck - which saves a lot of time and faff

I remember forgetting to wear a vest on pe day and being made to do it in just my knickers. I still remember how cold my chest felt and how exposed and embarrassed I was.

I remember once in year 1 discovering while sitting cross legged in assembly that I had somehow forgotten to put my knickers on that morning and was just wearing tights. I started panicking about PE as we did it in vest and knickers as was the norm then. I had a plan to say I wasnt feeling well. Luckily there was no PE that day and I found my knickers on my bed after school 😂

laddersandsnakes12 · 30/11/2024 10:40

Started school in the late 80's. In primary school we had a hut next to the outdoor pool that we changed in after swimming lessons. Not a problem getting changed in front of the other girls in my year but there was one male teacher there who would know we were in there changing and we could see his shadow on the blinds over the windows as he walked round and round the hut. We'd all shriek when we saw his shadow and hurry to change, in quite the panic that he'd see us 7/8yr olds naked. Which was probably the whole point of him circling the hut - feels really predatory especially as he had no business being there.
Our art teacher in middle school was also a complete perv. We must have only been 11 or 12, and one of the girls in class had been early in hitting puberty and having breasts - the rest of us girls were all very pre teen at the time. Our art teacher got us all to crowd around one big long table and then asked this girl to lay on it, a la Kate Winslet in Titanic (but with clothes on at least) and really study her figure, to take note of where her curves were and to draw her. I mean, just typing it now I can't actually believe that it happened, but it did. I can't imagine how humiliated she must have felt having all the boys and girls in her class stare at her body and draw it, especially as she must have already felt self conscious about her body changing much sooner than the rest of us. Hideous. I remember her crying after the lesson, it must have been so awful for her.

Emptying the teachers ashtray. 1970s.

Catholic school in 90s: after pe we had to line up in towels and walk through a shower area. The teacher, often male, would take our towels from us going in one end and hand them back to us coming out at the other end. This was age 11-16.

also, while on holiday in Africa in the 90s my parents made me and my brother climb down steps into a crocodile pit to have a picture and a stroke of “Charlie” the friendly crocodile. I still have a photo of me smiling merrily while trapped in this concrete pit that had a giant pond in the middle of it and about 50 crocodiles basking around the edge. My brother is crouching further back, closer to the steps, he clearly had more sense than me. We were 7 and 8. I still have no idea what my parents were thinking or where my survival instinct disappeared to that day.

We had this at our school too! Always the same male teacher supervising. We all openly called him a pervert but mainly just accepted it 😬😬😬😬

I went to catholic school, primary and secondary school. Of course it was fucking brutal

I find it ridiculous that primary children still get changed for PE. All that faff for passing beanbags to each other or hoopla. Bonkers…..they run around more at playtime.

I'm pretty sure I heard that they get undressed so that teachers can see if there are any bruises or unexplained marks. Also when they're young they learn how to get themselves dressed - some come to school unable to do that.

bendmeoverbackwards · 30/11/2024 10:53

@laddersandsnakes12 that brought a lump to my throat, that poor girl 😢

bendmeoverbackwards · 30/11/2024 10:56

Another one - reception class 1977. It was a hot day and the teacher had put a small paddling pool outside. In groups of 4 or 5 we all had a turn in the pool. When it was your turn, you had to undress completely and put on a pair of pants provided by the teacher. I was shy even then and felt uncomfortable having to take off my own knickers to put this other pair on.

There are 2 more people saying they met Charlie too... that's 5 of us!

You're probably right, they couldn't drug them all. Maybe they just fed them all really well (hopefully not on naive tourists). I remember 2 men holding him down while I posed for the photo but they weren't holding his jaw shut...

Makes me shudder now to think about it.

Being weighed in science class and everyone being put in a chart from heaviest to lightest. Of course being 5ft 5 at age 10 I was the heaviest (even heavier than the boys)

45 years later, I still remember the embarrassment

Oh god this happened to me several times. Last time was aged 13 when I flatly refused and to her credit the PE teacher agreed. Still weighed us though but didn’t make it public. The rest of the class were disappointed as they couldn’t wait to find out what I weighed( I was v fat at that age)

You will not be surprised to learn I developed anorexia in my late teens/ early 20s

TwistedSisters · 30/11/2024 11:09

So many examples but one that sticks out is when our teacher sent me and another girl down to the local corner shop to get him a mars bar and packet of crisps. It was during a lesson, not break, and the corner shop was a 3 or 4 minute walk away, completely off school grounds. We were in Year 5 😮 this was in 1999 or 2000. I clearly remember him giving us a fiver and telling us to come straight back!!
