Assisted Dying Bill tomorrow.

I really hope this goes ahead.

I'm from a family who die from cancer. It's a genetic thing. Over the years I've watched numerous loved ones die from this cruel and ravaging disease. It has taken a massive toll on us. From PTSD to immense guilt, complicated grief and fear of the future.

Not all of my family would have accessed Assisted Dying, but I know some did want it and requested it in the weeks / days leading to their death. They should have had the option of shortening their suffering. Having witnessed what they went through, I want that option for myself.

I want it for my mother. For the past 20 years she has told me when she wants out and how I will have to help her achieve it. I don't want to. She apologises for putting it on me. She shouldn't have to.

No one will be saved if this Bill is stopped, but fear and suffering will be reduced.

There is one other aspect to this as well. Since Shipman, medical staff are terrified of being accused of wrongdoing so they won't give people enough pain relief in case it kills them.

This law may actually mean that people now get the pain relief they need although the devil will be in the detail once it has gone through committee stage and the Lords.

Stop scaremongering. The status quo is terribly cruel, something had to change.

I'm not advocating for cruelty or "scaremongering", just legitimately concerned about where our good intentions here might lead if the status quo post results in even more cruelty.

Lucky lucky us

@Comedycook this is actually quite like our present. I've spent significant time in hospital and it's terrifying because people are often left suffering terribly. It's already happening.

Refusing the Bill does not equal more resources or an improved experience in hospital.

And I don't believe the government or NHS as institutions care about people one bit. That still hasn't changed my view.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/11/2024 16:04

I watched the debate today and for the first time in a long time I was proud of our politicians.

Thank you to all the MPs for giving this the attention and seriousness it deserves. And thank you to all the MPs brave enough to continue the discussion. Thanks

Imagine convincing people that it's now a good thing that a doctor can kill you

How selfish... don't they know the NHS is on its knees ..why would you want to live...look at you taking up a precious NHS bed when you're going to die anyway. I'm fed up of my taxes paying to keep people who are going to die anyway....

This is our future ..

You've made dozens of posts saying the same thing.

Why are you so invested in this? Are you worried your family wants to get rid of you?

Isn’t it incredible. What happened to first do no harm. UK has fallen badly.

No...just the government

That's not really necessary and not nice. This bill is a big decision either way

I can be as invested as I want...I live in this country FFS.

Or do you think people don't have a right to be interested in what the government does? That sounds a bit weird...are you not in favour of people having an opinion?

What's not very nice is that poster wanting 50 or so million people in this Country that want to be able to choose how we die to suffer because they're paranoid about Governments bumping people off.

Not necessary to post dozens of posts alluding to their crystal ball showing a dystopian future either.

I was impressed with Parliament today. No jeering, no baying, just respectful debate.
it’s how it should always be

GlassHeart1 · 29/11/2024 16:10

CandyMaker · 29/11/2024 15:04

That is the reality. A lot of people are still fighting for a right to life.

Agree with the above posters.
And as for quality of life, who is to decide what is a quality of life - not everyone wants to be going on holidays and being out and about - just spending time with family is also quality of life.

It's about costs and reducing bills for social care and it makes me scared of me medical profession and considering even to move anyone in the family to any form of supported living or old people's home.

Isn’t it incredible. What happened to first do no harm. UK has fallen badly.

Some would argue that allowing people to suffer is harmful.

A close family member of mine has glioblastoma. She’s 55. She’s at end of life, at home currently. She is suffering, she has no dignity. This is not what she would have chosen and she voiced that from the minute she was diagnosed. There is no cure. End of life care is woeful, and it has been left to family members to care for her. She would hate this, and the trauma of the last 6 months for her close family will never leave them. I welcome today’s news, and only wish it would have come a few years ago.

It's a bit more than some, it's the vast majority of the Country.

TheTidyBear · 29/11/2024 15:18

you are in the majority as evidenced by the poll on this thread

but as usual the vocal minority make more noise

Interesting to look at two polls.
Here on MN is 66% in favour.
I was reading the bbc updates and it was
61% against the bill from online voting earlier today

And thanks for proving my point.

This is indeed becoming the only socially acceptable way to think and if you disagree you're mocked and someone insinuates your family must hate you so much they want to kill you.....nice.

Well said 👏 everyone has choice.
There are no rights or wrongs to our own personal choice and no one should mock or question another for their personal choice.

The doctor doesn't administer the drug. You have to do it yourself.

Your response was nothing to do with what I said

Yes, it does. I was replying to your issue about the tone. The tone is like this because people are worried and are fed up of not having control of their own death.

That is why people are reacting like they are. It has been a long slog for me and other people and I am so happy.

EasternStandard · 29/11/2024 16:16

@TheTidyBear I disagree. People can voice their concerns either way without digs about family wanting to be cruel

Pp are talking about the decent debate today. Not everyone said yes and they'll have reasons for that

Same as on here

As opposed to several posts with lots of digs claiming we're all stupid and going to be bumped off?
