Do you tip your hairdresser or give a Christmas gift?

I don't usually tip my hairdresser. I work in the care industry and it's minimum wage and my hairdresser likely earns more than me.

Just wondering if I should give a Christmas gift when I have my appointment?

I always tip my hairdresser. I don't give a Christmas gift.

Starzinsky · 26/11/2024 20:17

I don't tip my hairdresser. I didn't think it was the norm with current prices unless they are very cheap.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 26/11/2024 20:18

I usually take a tin of celebrations to my appointment before Christmas

Tip every time; no Christmas gift

betterangels · 26/11/2024 20:20

Neither. It's just not the norm where I am. I don't know anyone who does.

I will give a box of chocolates to my nail tech, waxer and hairdresser this year. I'm due to see them all on the 21st before Xmas. They are all very reasonably priced and always get me in no matter what and amazing at what they do.

purplecorkheart · 26/11/2024 20:23

I do tip a small amount each time and often bring a gift of a face mask or a bar of chocolate etc. My hairdresser works from home and will see me after I finish work in the evening rather than me having to use up part of my Saturday.

To be fair equally they will often have a coffee and a sandwich or snacks for me if they think that the time was tight between me finishing work and my appointment

EveryDayisFriday · 26/11/2024 20:23

I didn't when I wasn't earning much though OP, they are definitely not expecting it.

NewName24 · 26/11/2024 20:43

No.
She is self employed and sets her own prices.

But I don't generally tip people or give them presents at Christmas. In the UK people work for wages.
I would get presents occasionally for volunteers who give up their time for people (Guiders, Scouters, Sports Coaches, etc) but not people I am paying to do a job, or who are being paid because I am using the business they work for.

I give her a Christmas bonus of cash because she is a one woman set up, has cut and coloured my hair for years and I feel like she deserves it.

GiddyRobin · 26/11/2024 21:19

I do, and the lady who does my nails. Nothing huge but I'll add more if it's a particularly good cut. My hair costs £65 a pop and it's 3 monthly, so I don't think that's bad not to give giant ones. I do refuse the free fringe trim and tidying she gives me - I pay half of a regular cut. No one should work for free, especially as she curls it and washes it too. At Christmas I buy her a present and tip extra. My nail lady only charges me very cheaply for incredible work, so I tend to tip higher for her. She also gets a Christmas gift and a large bonus.

Calypsocuckoo · 26/11/2024 21:23

I don’t tip my hairdresser or nail lady, but I do give them a card and nice present, as a thank you. I give my cleaner a present and £50 as a bonus as she works so hard. I also give the Evri delivery driver a present as she is super hard working and friendly.

Motheranddaughter · 26/11/2024 21:25

Tip hairdresser £20

Tip the junior £5

Give hairdresser bottle of champagne at Christmas and a few boxes of chocs for the staff
Always manage to get a last minute appointment 😀

I don't tip but I give a small present at Christmas eg bottle of wine

KinderChocolate · 26/11/2024 23:06

There's a hairdresser who comes to my mum's house. She does my mum's hair, my hair, my sister's hair and my gran's hair. My mum pays her and she always gives her a tip. She gives her a £5 tip and she also gives her a Christmas present every year, she gives her a box of chocolates.

memyselfi · 27/11/2024 13:42

I tip every appointment and have a gift for him for my last appt before Xmas .
He really undercharges in my opinion and is excellent so I want him to know I appreciate him .
