Even Christmas day she was kept in a drawer - oh how can someone be so cruel

The drawer where the child was kept, open underneath a cream divan bed with a blanket inside showing where the girl lived for the first three years of her life.

Cheshire mother who kept her baby hidden in a drawer for three years jailed

Prosecutors say the girl had "never known daylight or fresh air" when she was found.

what a bizarre take out of the whole thing. Would the mother have been redeemed if she got her out the drawer for Xmas day?

You don't think it is particularly shocking to leave your baby in a drawer for 2 days while you take your other children off to celebrate Christmas?

Poor little soul. Would a cleft palette have shown up in a scan? Did she find out and then go into denial?

A community midwife would have noticed if a mother had dropped off the radar.

Ah, so that would explain the lack of a midwife or doctor being involved at the birth. She would have had to have registered the birth though, so someone must have been aware of this child's existence? 🤔

FGS. She didn't register the birth. Do you really think that someone who would keep a baby in a drawer for 3 years would be fussed about breaking the rule that they have to register a birth?!

It said in one of the reports that the child was unregistered. So must have been delivered at home and immediately hidden.

Why would she have had to register the birth? No one knew about the baby for 2 years and 11 months.

PassingStranger · 26/11/2024 20:20

Disgusting, how could you treat your own child like that?

I simply can not fathom this. Would assume severe learning disability for the mother but as she was able to look after other children in a satisfactory manner this surely can't be the case. One of the worst cases of neglect I've ever read of. Heartbreaking..

It's not neglect, it's abuse and cruelty.

You don't think two days is a long time to leave a child alone?

Two minutes is too long to leave a baby or toddler unsupervised.

However, the fact it was Christmas during those 2 days is totally irrelevant.

Sells stories though doesn't it.

Cavalierchaos · 26/11/2024 20:21

There are no words. I don't think my mind can fully comprehend it.

But she wouldn't have had to register the birth as it was a hidden pregnancy. No one but the mother knew the child existed.

What I can't get my head around it that this baby would have been hard to feed, likely wouldn't have been able to breastfeed or bottle feed - so the mum must have quite painstakingly been feeding her with a syringe.
On one hand this level of care and effort and on the other hand unbelievable cruelty and neglect.

This.

It's why I have so many questions.

Baby born without knowing you're pregnant in a lockdown as a pandemic starts.

Baby clearly has some sort of needs with cleft palate.

Mum spends time researching how to feed her and does this daily.

Other children well cared for and obviously no sign of outward MH issues or I'm sure Her DP would have mentioned it.

I wonder if she went into panic mode and then got so far in she couldn't tell the truth?

Doesn't excuse it in the slightest - but there is clearly more to this than just hiding a child to abuse and neglect them.

Pluckolit · 26/11/2024 20:22

Why people are running round in circles trying to excuse or explain the mother's behaviour I have no idea. If a man had done this he would simply be written off as a monster, no nuance.

DoYouReally · 26/11/2024 20:22

Bloody hell, that's a hard read.

WTF is wrong with some people. So many people (myself included) would love to have a child but don't and then there's people like this who treat theirs so horrifically. I cannot get by head around her actions.

Bluesandwhites · 26/11/2024 20:23

As previous posters have written, so many children were horrendously abused during Lockdown, the "parents" took full advantage of the schools closing.
This case is sickening, and once read, you can not unread it.

It's not irrelevant as it provides a timeline, care of the partner knowing how long they were out of her house.

Write to the CPS and tell them they should never have mentioned Christmas.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Rachel Worthington, of CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said:
“This child has never had a birthday present, a Christmas present or anything to recognise these days. She’s had no interaction with any of her siblings."

Oh give over. I left my four month old safely in his cot unsupervised for about 5 minutes today while I went to the toilet.

coxesorangepippin · 26/11/2024 20:24

So the partner knew that the baby had been left??

Why didn't he do something about it?!?!

Also:

It is absolutely shocking. I imagine giving birth alone unexpectedly to a child with a deformity during a pandemic induced lockdown was traumatic enough to trigger a major mental health break.

This doesn't excuse her behavior.

I literally just watched that on the bbc with my mouth agape.

I saw it on ITV news and was the same, I was almost gasping with horror. The report said that the police officers who were involved in the case were crying in court. Profoundly shocking

What are you on about? The partner was the one who discovered the baby and called social services.

They absolutely are with all the "she must have severe MH problems" posts

If a bloke had done this literally no one would be saying "he must have had mental health issues".

windyhairday · 26/11/2024 20:26

OOf. Shocking. I thought initially it'd be about something else... like a mum had a stillbirth and.... couldn't cope with what happened. Very shocking read

No. He discovered the baby's existence well after that.

Looking back, he realised that not only must the mother have left the child all day when at work, there was one occasion - a Christmas - when they went to his parent's house early on Christmas Eve morning, and did not leave there until the evening of Christmas Day, meaning the child was alone that entire time.
