Am I an alcoholic

I only drink one night a week but the amount I'm drinking worries me. It started where it was like a date night with DH so we'd have some drinks and watch something on tv together.

But now the bottle gets opened at 4pm ish and I'm drinking 2 bottles of Prosecco in one evening. It's worrying me.
I don't ever drink more than once a week and never feel like doing so but I'm worried that I'm drinking too much on that one night.
Is it possible to be an alcoholic if you just drink 1 night a week? Or am I worrying for nothing?

What would happen if you didn't drink on that night and went to the cinema instead?

I don’t know if you’re an alcoholic or not.

I do know that binge drinking is really bad for you and that’s a large amount in one evening.

The term 'alcoholic' isn't that helpful.

The question really is 'do I have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol'?

Only you can answer that truthfully.

DustyLee123 · 25/11/2024 07:45

Is this a set day in the week?
If you couldn’t buy Prosecco because there was a world shortage, would you have to drink something else or would you go without?
Alcoholic is an old word, it’s more about being reliant upon or addicted to alcohol now.

BeMintBee · 25/11/2024 07:48

Well I would call that binge drinking which personally I think is a problem
Recommended units of alcohol a week is 14 and your drinking 20.

PlumpCatIsBestCat · 25/11/2024 07:49

Cut it to one bottle and see if you still enjoy it as much. I'd look to moving to splitting the bottle with him. If it's still enjoyable, it's the tradition with him and not the alcohol.

DP and I don't always have wine in the house but when we do will do a glass together and it will last a week.

You are worried enough to post here, on that basis reduce how much you drink on this date night. There is no need to start at 4pm

Two bottles in one night is quite heavy binge drinking.

BearOnABlanket · 25/11/2024 13:12

2 bottles between 2?

So it's on the heavy side for one night - but then you're drinking from 4, so you have a lot of time to cover it in. I think it's technically a binge - but well, nothing on my student days!

When I was with my ex, 2 bottles of wine was the normal amount at the weekend too.

I generally drink one over the weekend now, and nothing in the week (thanks to Mounjaro), which is a level I'm happy at - it's been more at other points which I did think wasn't ideal. If it was in the house, I had a drink or two - so I just didn't keep it in the house. I didn't need it, I did want it though - about on a par with other treats in the house.

So are you an alcoholic? No I don't think so. Should you cut down? Depends how it's affecting you really.

When you start to drink and can’t control when you stop then it’s problematic. I have the same issue, binge drinking and can’t seem to control my intake once I start. If it’s once a week or once a year the behaviour around being in control seems to be what you’d maybe benefit from working on.

Worth watching last night’s Panorama
