Has anyone on Mumsnet ever been to a UK town or city Christmas Market and thought "that was great, so glad I went"?

I love Cardiff one! We go each year, but 2023 was rather empty on the day we chose, which made it less enjoyable.
Smaller local ones have always been worthy too.

Sadly, no. :( Have been to several in mainland Europe as have family over there and always felt that they were value for money, good quality food & drink and they get the ‘magic’ right. Always felt a bit ripped off at the UK ones. I really wish we could do it well, I love a Christmas market.

Don't even attempt to walk up The Shambles in December

Not on your Nellie! There doesn't seem to be anything much down there these days anyway but Harry Potter shops and London memorabilia.. But I do love the hat shop over the road at the M&S end.

Plus, what's happened to Fossgate? All the lovely shops and the seafood restaurant seem to have gone.

Letmegohome · 24/11/2024 15:08

Fossgate is lots of independent restaurants /eateries/ pubs a couple of charity shops , four / five hairdressers. lochfine went bust as company a while ago, which lovely shops are you referring to ?

Yes, great day out at Bath Christmas market last year

pointythings · 24/11/2024 18:20

Yes, me in 2018. Not one of the huge ones, town local to me. Very busy but lots of fun and most things not extortionate. We set out on a quest to get new ornaments for our new tree in recognition of our fresh start as a family after my abusive alcoholic husband died. It felt like freedom.

That's really poignant. Sending some early Christmas wishes your way for this year.

Another vote for Winchester!

My husband and I used to live in Kingston-Upon-Thames and always enjoyed that Christmas market as well :)

Rporting back.

I went to Chatsworth Christmas market and it was excellent. I highly recommend it.

Edited to say that it finished yesterday.

We went to the Christmas market, house decorations and lights at Waddesdon Manor (NT) last week and that was good, it was a weekday so not to busy in the afternoon

My town (Swindon) has a xmas market this year.
Don't bother! It has been open a week and half the sheds have no one in! There is a drink/bar shed with seating. Not seen a soul get a drink there. Why sit out in the cold with an over priced pint when there are two Wetherspoons in town?
It is also at odds with the usual market that is on 2/3 times a week.
Most of the sheds are food ones anyway.
