Does anyone else find watching old tv shows soothing?

I’ve been watching Tales of The Unexpected and while the stories certainly aren’t cosy, there’s still something soothing about seeing the old fashioned haircuts, clothes and decor.

I watch a lot of old shows for this reason. I appreciate that there are many less appealing aspects of certain older shows but I generally find them comforting.

Which old programmes do you find soothing? I’m always looking for more. I’ll leave it to the individual to decide what constitutes old.

Yes, I love watching Butterflies.

I find old black and white British films soothing. There's a Channel called Talking Pictures ( I think) which has a lot of old films but also old series like The Brothers, Rumpole of the Bailey etc.

I’m going to re-visit Keeping Up Appearances after seeing an old clip on Facebook.

The clip was absolutely hilarious and it just made me feel warm inside. 🫣

The Good Life for me. Always a comfort watch.

Tusktusk · 23/11/2024 18:26

Not so old as your examples, but I love watching One Foot in the Grave, the Vicar of Dibley, and the slightly older The Good Life. Of course these are comedies, which are comforting in themselves, but the reminders of my childhood and simpler times (in ky own life) are as much of a pull.

Yes I do. I love old episodes of Wife Swap from the early 2000s. And I watch episodes of Playdays that I watched as a very young kid. It really takes me back.

Yes, and Dad's Army. All Creatures Great & Small... Possibly even Are You Being Served?

Squirrelsnut · 23/11/2024 18:30

Gosh, yes. Gideon's Way and the Classic British Telly channel on YouTube are a goldmine semi-cosy but still thoughtful comfort watching.

Talking Pictures are amazing. It’s a channel literally run by a woman and her father from a garden shed.

Inspector Morse, despite the grisly murders. I want to be drinking my way round early 1990s Oxford listening to opera...

Ladyswhatlunch · 23/11/2024 18:32

Yes I do, I will often have an old tv show on in the background, it’s very comforting, at the moment ‘My Family’ is my show of choice.

arabellacanella · 23/11/2024 18:32

The Waltons and Columbo. They were the best

Georgyporky · 23/11/2024 18:33

Not sure about soothing, but enjoyable compared to what is frequently on offer now.
Just binge-watched all of Black Adder, currently in the middle of both Porridge & Last Tango in Halifax.
All cheered me up - with the exception of the last episode of B.A. !

@GingerbreadCrisps Where is TOTU please, I used to love that series.

Keeping Up Appearances. My mother had a friend who was just like Mrs Bucket - oops, sorry, Mrs Bouquet.

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 23/11/2024 18:46

My 'old' watches are quite recent. If I don't want to think I have a few different choices, BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, early series of The Crown, The King's Speech, Hidden Figures, Call the Midwife, Foyles War and Discovery of Witches on Sky.
