Does anyone else find watching old tv shows soothing?

I’ve been watching Tales of The Unexpected and while the stories certainly aren’t cosy, there’s still something soothing about seeing the old fashioned haircuts, clothes and decor.

I watch a lot of old shows for this reason. I appreciate that there are many less appealing aspects of certain older shows but I generally find them comforting.

Which old programmes do you find soothing? I’m always looking for more. I’ll leave it to the individual to decide what constitutes old.

Inspector Morse, despite the grisly murders. I want to be drinking my way round early 1990s Oxford listening to opera...

I had lots of episodes of Inspector Morse on DVD but recently when I looked for them they are no longer here. I must have given them away when I moved flats, although can't understand why as I LOVE Morse.

I do have every episode of Taggart however.

Highway to heaven is currently in sky and also London’s burning, funny watching them again.

Old game shows we try and guess the year/decade by hairstyles and the clothes and prizes.

Yes, I’ve just finished rewatching Watching which I loved as a child. Also regularly watch favourites like Red Dwarf, X-Files and Buffy. Got a soft spot for cheese murder shows like Diagnosis Murder and Murder She Wrote too.

Next month I’ll be rewatching all the vintage Ghost Stories for Christmas and Christmas specials of One Foot on the Grave, Father Ted, etc. Can’t beat it!

You’ve also reminded me I must rewatch the scariest episodes of Tales of the Unexpevted (Flypaper, anyone?) and Inside No.9 this year too. Love a Christmas spook!

Oh I watched loads of the Tales fron the Unexpected series a couple of years ago.
Thoroughly enjoyed them
Really good stories and usually featured such well known and big name.actors and actresses . The one featuring. Joan Collins springs to mind.I'm not a fan of hers but that was really good fun.

I bought the box set! They are all available on YouTube but the quality is not great. First couple of series are on itvx too , but I think you have to pay for them.

I haven’t read the whole thread but I remember a friend telling me she was recommended for children to avoid the latest kids programmes like cocomelon in favour of muted, calming 90’s cartoons/children’s films. Apparently the loud colourful brash kids offerings these days are overstimulating.

Family fortune's is good for more of the same.

IjustbelieveinMe · 24/11/2024 10:47

Not a tv show but I like watching Whistle down the wind. It's black and white and just makes me nostalgic for an era gone by. If I can watch it on a rainy Sunday afternoon even better.

This is a bit niche and a long shot but I want to watch the 80s TVB Hong Kong versions of Gom Yong ‘s Legends of the Condor Heroes, and The Bund with a young Chow Yun Fat, but I don’t know how.

The Bund is that about Shanghai?

Edit: Link not working, but if you type "Chow Yun-fat Ray Lui Angie Chiu|The Bund 4K" into YouTube you should find it.

Thanks so much. I’ve always only managed to find clips of it on YouTube though. And yes the title literally translates to ‘Shanghai Bay’….I can hear the theme song and title sequence already….

The Bill. Makes me feel safe somehow. Calms me.

This exactly

Violinist64 · 24/11/2024 13:58

@DreamyMe, my children loved Come Outside when they were children. Many of the programmes l enjoy rewatching have already been mentioned. YouTube is very good for she old TV programmes. Home to Roost is there, for example. I do enjoy Ever Decreasing Circles. It is a lovely, gentle comedy and shows a man with OCD and, to modern eyes, someone who is very obviously on the autistic spectrum at a time before it was known. I think this was Richard Briers' finest comedy performance.

BringMeTea · 24/11/2024 16:13

Just bought complete set of Jam and Jerusalem dvds off ebay. Enablers. 😂

Does anyone remember a BBC series from the 80s called Bluebell? It starred Carolyn Pickles as a dancer and was all about her life.

Also, Nanny starring Wendy Craig?

I'd love to watch those again!

I loved Nanny too.

DreamyMe · 24/11/2024 17:29

I also loved rewatching Fun House (with Pat, Melanie and Martina), Woof, Bernard's Watch and Sooty (with Matthew Corbett). My ds has seen lots of vintage telly!

DreamyMe · 24/11/2024 17:35

Violinist64 - You can't beat a bit of Auntie Mabel....Flying a plane for a trip to the library or Safeways!! Grin

LyndaSnellsSniff · 24/11/2024 17:36

Another lovely, soothing programme is the stop motion version of The Wind In The Willows. It follows the ebb and flow of the seasons and is especially cosy to watch in the autumn and winter. The theme tune is like a mental massage.
