Does anyone else find watching old tv shows soothing?

I’ve been watching Tales of The Unexpected and while the stories certainly aren’t cosy, there’s still something soothing about seeing the old fashioned haircuts, clothes and decor.

I watch a lot of old shows for this reason. I appreciate that there are many less appealing aspects of certain older shows but I generally find them comforting.

Which old programmes do you find soothing? I’m always looking for more. I’ll leave it to the individual to decide what constitutes old.

I recently binge watched Gossip Girl, the one with Blake Lively, loved it. Admired all the high end fashion, as satisfying as flicking through a glossy fashion magazine.

Also love Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth.

Friends is another comfort watch.

Last of the summer wine for me.

@DopamineDresser I know right. The fashion on the show is beautiful, it would not look dated even now. The actors and actresses are incredibly beautiful and mesmerising too.

Personally I think its about the acting, people were a bit more normal on screen, intonation was different, not so 'performative' which sounds a bit odd as of course they are acting but I find everything now too emotive and over the top

Thats why its soothing

They are - the casting is excellent and the dresses! 😍 Just such enjoyable viewing

Yes! Antiques roadshow, Midsomer murders, Crimewatch.
The music from Antiques roadshow makes me feel so warm inside and reminds me of sitting together eating tea whilst watching it on a Sunday evening with my parents.
Also The Snowman film at Christmas has very happy memories for me 😊

Oh god all the time, it's so much better than what's on offer and brings a lovely big of fuzzy nostalgia.
Most recently it's been:

Absolutely Fabulous
The League of Gentlemen
The Fast Show
Grange Hill
They Think It's All Over
90s crimewatch (to bring back the crush I used to have on Nick Ross).
The X files (ditto above with David Duchovny).

Hi-De-Hi
The Good Life
To The Manor Born

All those old sit coms. It seems like such a simpler, more innocent, less cynical time. Love them.

Not necessarily old tv but there is some TV I find hugely comforting… downton abbey, heartland on Netflix, the crown, they’ve all been watched multiple times.

I love the crown and downton, but i haven't seen heartland, is it similar?

Daysnconfuddled · 23/11/2024 20:41

This is a bit niche and a long shot but I want to watch the 80s TVB Hong Kong versions of Gom Yong ‘s Legends of the Condor Heroes, and The Bund with a young Chow Yun Fat, but I don’t know how.

NotYourSaviour · 23/11/2024 20:42

I find Goodnight Sweetheart incredibly soothing, and Only Fools is a comfort watch too.

Nitgel · 23/11/2024 20:42

Yes i recently bought the TV series Angels and it was just so different to todays TV. Calm no ridiculous soundtrack or storylines.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 23/11/2024 20:43

So many of the above but my top 3 comfort series are;

The Darling Buds of May
To The Manor Born
The House of Eliott

Nitgel · 23/11/2024 20:43

And I hound Bouquet of barbed wire in a charity shop and it was fab

notnorman · 23/11/2024 20:44

EatTheBastard · 23/11/2024 20:46

And all the Carry on films!

PomegranateKernals · 23/11/2024 18:21

Yes, I love watching Butterflies.

Ah me too, just so sweet and gentle 🥰

LyndaSnellsSniff · 23/11/2024 20:52

Does anyone remember a BBC series from the 80s called Bluebell? It starred Carolyn Pickles as a dancer and was all about her life.

Also, Nanny starring Wendy Craig?

I'd love to watch those again!

ExhaustedHousewife · 23/11/2024 20:52

2point4 children
Only fools and horses
Where the heart is
Doc martin
One foot in the grave
Great comfort from all of these.

Daysnconfuddled · 23/11/2024 20:53

I love Outnumbered.

Not really, it’s about a horse ranch in Canada (in a soapy way rather than a Yellowstone way) It’s just very easy watching. Unfortunately, although there’s something like 20 seasons, Netflix only have half of them which seems a bit pointless! Watching series 1-14 got me through the first lock down.
