Is this normal when working in hospitality?

My DC has been working in a bar/restaurant that is part of a chain. The bar closes at 10 and that is when his shift ends. However, the staff often hang around after closing hours for a few drinks. They don't pay for the drinks. My son says the manager encourages this. Is it normal? I'm concerned he will get into trouble for it. Sometimes these "lock ins" last into the early hours so they must be consuming a significant amount of stock.

Very normal IME although that was a long time ago, I worked in loads of bars and pubs. Nice to hear it still goes on tbh. I had a great time

We were allowed a "staffie" - a staff meal and drink after work and any additional drinks at cost so £2 or something.

how long has the manager worked there?

StormingNorman · 23/11/2024 15:30

I was a waitress as an older teen 30 years ago and it was standard to unwind with a few drinks after closing.

Very normal to stay after for a drink.

Not for it to be unlimited & free!

Agree as above. Happy days.

It was in the 3 bars I worked in. It's a tiring and low paid job, and draught drinks have a huge mark up, so most bartenders see it as part of their staff benefits because they basically don't get a single other benefit
