Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

We don’t ever switch it off, the thermostats are all set for each room and if the temperature drops below a certain number it clicks in. It doesn’t tend to come on in the bedrooms overnight though, our house is well insulated and I don’t like a warm bedroom but I like the rest of the house hot!!

This - we maintain the house at a constant, consistent temperature as it’s cheaper to keep the temp ticking over than to let the house get very very cold and have to heat it up to a bearable level every time the heating goes on. It’s the advice any British Gas engineer would give you.

See that’s more than my heating comes on and we just leave it set to 18.5c permanently.

The most it’s been on all week is 3hrs and 52minutes and one day this week it
Hasn’t come on at all.

We have no thermostat and are having our house rewired at the moment so it's an all or nothing kind of thing, it's either on or it's not. Our heat is usually on and hour in the morning and an hour at night before bedtime. As I said our temperature has been -2/-3 this week so it's been more. The OP's question was about whether we keep the heat on at night, not how long the heat is on for in total.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 22/11/2024 16:44

Can't even afford to have it on during the day so not a chance at night.

GrazeConcern · 22/11/2024 16:44

No not normally, i find 16-18 the perfect bedroom temperature and it rarely drops below that. I quite like the challenge of getting out of bed into a freezing room, it’s a real boost when I’ve done it, got dressed!

Lindjam · 22/11/2024 16:45

Off at night here. Set to come on 15 minutes before my alarm in the morning.

loulouljh · 22/11/2024 16:45

Never. Would be too warm. You are warm in bed anyway....

I didn’t know people had their heating on at night until I joined MN and I am old.
For those people who do put it on; doesn’t it wake you up if it clicks on at night with a bit of gurgling in the pipes?

nope.

EveryDayisFriday · 22/11/2024 16:47

We have ours set to 17c at night, 18c during the day and 19.5c morning and evening.
The upstairs stays cooler than downstairs (where the sensor is) so it's not too hot at night.

GivingitToGod · 22/11/2024 16:47

Can't see the point of heating being on when you are sleeping. Set on a timer to come on before I wake up! Pure bliss(coming from a childhood where there was no ch and singleparenthood when I couldn't afford it! Never take it 4 granted

EverythingElseIsTaken · 22/11/2024 16:48

My heating is never actually turned off (not even in summer). We use the thermostat and timer control. For a couple of hours in the morning it’s set to 18 degrees, during the day it’s 15.5 degrees (but can boost if sitting around so likely to feel the cold), Then 18 again late afternoon until around 9 and 10 degrees overnight - although I don’t think it actually gets down to that, I certainly don’t feel cold. I really don’t like being too warm when I’m trying to sleep. Heating is not necessary when you’re tucked up under a duvet.

Isn't it funny? Those of us who have our heating on overnight or at least set to come on, don't tell others they should do it too, but SOME of those who choose not to have their heating on don't seem to think that others shouldn't do it either.

Yeah people who like it cold get really weird about it. Like it makes you a better person if you don't feel the cold.

I don't have it set overnight but I do have it on until 11pm so I am warm when I am drifting off and then it comes back on at 5am so I'm not freezing getting out of bed at 6

Sia8899 · 22/11/2024 16:50

I set it to 13 or 14° at night so it’s essentially off but will come on if it’s a very cold night. If I turned it off completely the house would be unbearable on a freezing morning. But my duvet keeps me warm so I don’t want it above about 17° in the bedroom over night

lobsterkiller · 22/11/2024 16:50

No, absolutely not and I live in a cold house. During this cold week, the heating has maintained a constant, low temperature but it definitely gets turned down to 12 before bed. I need to be warm but I need the room to be cold.

I find having the heating on whilst asleep at night a waste of money.

I was brought up in a house with central heating and my parents don't have it on overnight either.

SkylarH · 22/11/2024 16:51

Off at night and if I ever forget to do this (rare), I feel very guilty and wasteful in the morning.
We have 2 young kids but the house holds the heat well.

Ah, over the last week it's gone all competitive Scrooginess with judgment chucked in! 😂

WhimsicalGubbins76 · 22/11/2024 16:53

I absolutely do not 🤣 I hate being hot as it is, and being hot at night is even worse!!

But im the opposite extreme, im one of those that has a fan on every night even if the house is encased in ice

Why heat the house when you're in bed? Must cost a fortune!

unsync · 22/11/2024 16:54

No. I sleep above the utility room where the boiler is, it sounds like a 747 taking off when it fires up. I'd never get any sleep! On at 07.30 off at 22.00. Warm duvets and flannel nightwear.

The only time I change this is if we have a prolonged cold snap where temps don't rise over freezing day or night. Fortunately, that doesn't happen too often here.

TorroFerney · 22/11/2024 16:54

SongSungBlues · 22/11/2024 15:05

Heating is off overnight, always. I'm never cold at night, and like to have bedroom windows open a crack all year round. I prefer to be on the cooler side, and layer up, than have it warm enough for t-shirts in the winter.

I find over-heated homes to be stuffy.

Yes we have the window open. I like the weight of blankets so I’d rather have it colder and I have a blanket and then my dressing gown over the duvet on my side.

MightyGoldBear · 22/11/2024 16:54

Off all night. On at 5am when we are up till about 7am or whenever it reaches 19/20 then off till 3pm when it's on till 5pm or has reached 19/20.

Whoever is cold has hot water bottles or heated blanket on.
We are on oil so it's costs a lot to refill.

LBFseBrom · 22/11/2024 16:54

Yes I do, lower but on.

That makes sense. I hate the cold too but I can't bear heat when I'm in bed and it gives me a muggy head when I get up.

RaininSummer · 22/11/2024 16:55

Off about 8 ish and on again the next evening unless it's a weekend when I may turn it on early. I can't sleep with the boiler going let alone the cost .

ohtowinthelottery · 22/11/2024 16:56

Heating goes off here between 10.30pm and 6.30am. The only time I've ever kept it on overnight was the year it went down to -18°C (I'm in the West Midlands).
Nobody has ever suffered from hypothermia because the heating isn't on overnight. We mostly use 10.5 tog duvets, noone has a hot water bottle or electric blanket and we're all fine.

We even managed a few years ago for 4 days in November with no electricity or heating at all following a storm. It got down to 6°c in the bedrooms but we still managed.

shellyleppard · 22/11/2024 16:57

Very very rarely do I keep the heating on all night. It goes off around 8 pm then on first thing in the morning. Extra blankets on the beds and toasty warm all night
